The Agro-Forestry-Fishery Product Market Bulletin of the Import-Export Department (Ministry of Industry and Trade) has just announced that, according to statistics from the Malaysian Customs Department, in the first quarter of 2025, Malaysia imported 22.3 thousand tons of coffee, worth 132.3 million USD, up 5.8% in volume and 66.9% in value compared to the same period last year.

The average import price of coffee into this country reached 5,942 USD/ton, up 57.8% over the same period. In particular, the average import price of coffee from Vietnam increased by 84.9% compared to the same period in 2024, to 5,459 USD/ton.

Vietnam was the largest coffee supplier to Malaysia in the first quarter of 2025, reaching 8.22 thousand tons, worth 44.8 million USD, up 6.1% in volume and 96.2% in value compared to the same period in 2024.

Vietnam’s coffee market share in Malaysia’s total imports increased slightly from 36.80% in the first quarter of 2024 to 36.90% in the first quarter of 2025.

Brazil and Indonesia ranked second and third, respectively, among the largest coffee suppliers to Malaysia in the first quarter.

The bulletin also stated that the coffee consumption trend of Malaysians in recent years has changed significantly, reflecting a blend of modern lifestyles, international cultural influences, and the experiential demands of young people.

According to data from Cafely, as quoted in the bulletin, Malaysians consume an average of about 2.76 cups of coffee per day, comparable to countries such as Vietnam (2.82) and China (3.25).

Although the per capita coffee consumption in Malaysia is still lower than in many other countries, its market is on a strong growth trajectory. Changes in lifestyle, rising incomes, and innovations in product offerings, quality, and brewing technology are driving Malaysia’s coffee consumption, presenting opportunities for domestic and international producers and retailers.
