Embracing Innovation in Healthcare: FPT Chairman Emphasizes Vietnam’s Potential in the AI Era

At the Healthcare Innovation Forum (HIF 2025), co-organized by FPT Corporation and Pharma Group on June 6th, prominent figures in technology and medicine voiced their optimism about the Vietnamese pharmaceutical industry’s potential to soar in the AI era.

FPT Chairman, Truong Gia Binh, addressed the forum, emphasizing that it is time for the country to leverage its innovative strength to achieve bold ambitions.

“Vietnam has the potential to become the world’s largest clinical testing center,” asserted Mr. Binh. This statement is not merely an aspiration but a call to action, setting the stage for groundbreaking changes in healthcare.

According to the FPT Chairman, Vietnam is entering an era of transformation, fueled by grand dreams and aspirations. Recent achievements in national data initiatives serve as a testament to this spirit, including the implementation of the citizen identification data system within just seven months. Vietnam is now working on establishing a healthcare and health insurance database for its citizens.

To turn these grand visions for healthcare into reality, Mr. Binh believes Vietnam should focus on three main pillars: mechanism, innovation, and public-private collaboration.

FPT Chairman Truong Gia Binh: “We can only stand shoulder to shoulder with advanced nations by investing in the most advanced industries, including pharmaceuticals.”

Regarding the first pillar, Mr. Binh suggests that it is time for Vietnam to shift away from the mindset of “if it can’t be controlled, it should be prohibited.” Instead, the mechanism should be viewed as a competitive advantage for the nation. He emphasizes that competitiveness in healthcare lies in enabling citizens’ access to the best services and products as quickly as possible.

“Our goal should be to increase access from 9% to 51%, so that Vietnamese people can access new medicines as quickly as Americans or Japanese. This should not just be a desire but a national goal, so that mechanisms and policies can be designed and implemented accordingly,” he added.

“We can only stand shoulder to shoulder with advanced nations by investing in the most advanced industries, including pharmaceuticals,” affirmed the FPT Chairman.

The second pillar focuses on innovation, particularly in establishing a creative pharmaceutical industry. Mr. Binh recalled the Prime Minister’s message at the Davos meeting earlier this year when he met with global pharmaceutical corporations: Vietnam is determined to embrace advanced technology and develop a highly skilled IT and AI workforce.

With approximately one million IT engineers and a target of 500,000 AI-proficient individuals, Vietnam boasts a talented human resource pool. “Our most important resource is our people,” emphasized Mr. Binh. Coupled with existing technological infrastructure and supportive policies like Resolution 59, he believes Vietnam can make significant strides in healthcare.

Mr. Binh also proposed a collaboration between pharmaceutical and technology companies to leverage AI in new drug development. With its technological foundation and policies encouraging international cooperation, Vietnam is well-positioned to conquer new heights in the pharmaceutical industry.

The final pillar underscores the importance of private sector involvement, as highlighted in Resolution 68. Mr. Binh called for strong linkages between pharmaceutical companies, hospitals, doctors, and pharmacists, united by a shared data platform.

Vietnam’s achievement in establishing a citizen identification data system within seven months underscores the potential for building a healthcare and health insurance database.

To realize this vision, there is a need to cultivate a new workforce proficient in both IT and AI, as well as chemistry and biology. This talented team will lead the way for Vietnam to reach new heights in healthcare.

“We can only stand shoulder to shoulder with advanced nations by investing in the most advanced industries, including pharmaceuticals,” concluded the FPT Chairman, underscoring the nation’s potential and determination.
