The new Duong Bridge project, a pivotal transportation initiative, boasts an investment of over 1.8 trillion VND. Beyond its role as a traffic connector and reliever for the deteriorating old Duong Bridge, it promises to expand urban development, enhance architectural aesthetics, and beautify the riverside landscape.
Over two years since its groundbreaking, the project has achieved significant milestones. Numerous sturdy pillars now rise from the riverbed, marking the bridge’s progress.
The road bridge spans from the old Duong Bridge junction on Ngo Gia Tu Street (Viet Hung Ward) to the intersection of Ha Huy Tap and Phan Dang Luu Streets (Phu Dong Commune), approximately 100 meters downstream from the existing bridge.
The new road bridge stretches 382 meters, featuring a unique combination of cable-stayed and steel arch designs. Its 18.5-meter-wide deck ensures a 4.75-meter clearance for river navigation.
The bridge connects to a 318-meter-long access road system, designed for a vehicle speed of 80 km/h.
The entire structure is planned for six motor vehicle lanes and two mixed-use lanes. Initially, four motor vehicle lanes will be completed to meet current traffic demands.
To date, the main pillars T3 and T4 in the river’s center have taken shape. Unlike traditional concrete beam bridges, the new Duong Bridge impresses with its graceful, curved steel arches.
On-site, hundreds of engineers and workers are diligently assembling the steel arch segments to craft the bridge’s distinctive “silken ribbon” design.
Upon completion, the new Duong Bridge will not only alleviate traffic congestion in the northeastern gateway but also transform the riverside urban landscape. It is poised to drive economic and social development, offering Hanoi a modern architectural icon rooted in cultural heritage.
Concurrent with the road bridge, the rail bridge component is also under construction.
This red-painted structure, approximately 1 kilometer long, is positioned 16.5 meters upstream from the old bridge, aligning with Hanoi’s Urban Railway Line 1.
In 2022, the “Giao Duyen” architectural design won first prize in a competition organized by the (former) Ministry of Transport. Inspired by white flowers rising from the water, it symbolizes the blessings of nature.
The bridge’s design also incorporates the river’s name, “Thien Duc” (Heaven’s Virtue), and intertwining hands, symbolizing harmony, unity, and collective aspirations for national development.
