In a joint operation, the Central Investigation Bureau (CIB) and the Consumer Protection Police Division (CPPD), alongside Thailand’s Ministry of Agriculture, dismantled a syndicate trafficking substandard chemical fertilizers. The raid, conducted in Sukhothai province, led to the arrest of six suspects and the seizure of goods valued at 304,000 baht (approximately $8,500 USD).

Led by CIB Director General Lieutenant General Jiraphop Phuridet, authorities targeted a market in Village 8, Tha Chai Subdistrict, Si Satchanalai District, following citizen reports of illegal fertilizer sales. The operation underscores Thailand’s commitment to safeguarding agricultural integrity and consumer trust.

Investigations revealed the syndicate advertised a 25-7-7 fertilizer formula via the LINE app, priced at 950 baht per 50kg bag on installment or 900 baht in cash. Packaged in 320 unmarked plastic bags labeled “intermediate and micronutrient chemical fertilizer,” the products emitted a strong chemical odor, raising suspicions of unregistered nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P), and potassium (K) compounds—a violation of mandatory Ministry of Agriculture registration protocols.

Authorities apprehended the alleged ringleader, Mr. S. (63), alongside five accomplices, including drivers and handlers. The confiscated fertilizers were sealed and transferred to the Sukhothai Agricultural Research and Development Center for analysis. Samples were dispatched to the Regional Agricultural Research and Development Office 2 (Phitsanulok) to verify compliance with registered specifications. Non-compliance could trigger prosecution under the Fertilizer Act 1975, which enforces stringent penalties for unlicensed distribution and unregistered sales.

Charges include “unlicensed chemical fertilizer trade” and “sale of unregistered mandatory-registration products,” carrying fines and imprisonment. This crackdown reflects Thailand’s resolve to combat counterfeit fertilizers, protecting farmers and bolstering confidence in domestic agricultural markets.
