The Ninh Thuan Nuclear Power Project is Vietnam’s first nuclear power project, comprising two plants: Ninh Thuan 1 and Ninh Thuan 2, with a total capacity of 4,000 MW over an area of 1,642 hectares.
The project was first approved by the National Assembly in 2009 but was suspended in 2016 due to capital constraints, economic conditions, and safety concerns following the Fukushima incident. It was relaunched after the 13th Central Committee of the Communist Party of Vietnam (November 25, 2024) agreed to restart the project.
During the meeting, the Provincial Project Management Board proposed two locations for the resettlement area: Bai Hom (Da Hang Village) and My Hoa Village, both located on Provincial Road 702. These sites ensure a safe distance of over 5 km from the reactor core and are outside the emergency protection zone.
Bai Hom offers convenient transportation, requires no land clearance, and has received strong public support. My Hoa, located near the sea, is advantageous for livelihood development but requires relocation and land clearance.
The Vice Chairman of the Provincial People’s Committee agreed with the proposed locations and tasked the Project Management Board with finalizing the report based on feedback from departments and agencies regarding area size, technical infrastructure, environmental factors, and transportation connectivity. The Provincial People’s Committee will then submit the report to the Provincial Party Committee for approval.

According to the Power Development Plan VIII, Vietnam will need approximately 150,000 MW of electricity capacity by 2030, projected to increase to 490,000–573,000 MW by 2050, with an annual electricity consumption growth rate of about 10%.
Given that renewable energy sources like solar and wind power remain highly dependent on natural conditions, and coal-fired power faces pressure to reduce emissions, nuclear power is seen as a strategic choice. It provides stable output, low emissions, and supports national energy security.
