On December 6-7, the People’s Committee of Can Tho City held a meeting with various departments to discuss, analyze, and evaluate the implementation results of the 2025 economic growth scenario and the targets, tasks for 2026.

Mr. Truong Canh Tuyen, Chairman of the People’s Committee of Can Tho City, speaking at the meeting

Mr. Vo Nhut Quang, Deputy Director of the Department of Finance of Can Tho City, reported that the GRDP growth rate in 2025 reached 7.23%, with Sector 1 at 3.79%, Sector 2 at 8.01%, and Sector 3 at 8.79%; product tax achieved 4.99%.

Compared to the target scenario, the 2025 growth fell short by approximately 2.77 percentage points. The Department of Finance has advised the People’s Committee of Can Tho City to submit to the City Council a target GRDP growth rate of 10-10.5% or higher for 2026.

Mr. Quang noted that while the 2025 growth did not meet the set target, it clearly demonstrated the significant efforts of the Party Committee, local authorities, businesses, and the people of Can Tho City. It also reflects the city’s development status amidst organizational restructuring and provincial administrative boundary consolidation.

Mr. Thieu Vinh An, Head of Can Tho City Statistics, analyzed: “The main reason for the economic growth falling short of expectations lies in two sectors. In the industrial sector, electricity accounts for 19% of the industry’s total output but decreased by 18% in the fourth quarter. While manufacturing showed good growth, some industries did not meet expectations.”

Additionally, Mr. An pointed out that in the service sector, the growth rate of the accommodation industry in the fourth quarter was not achieved, and some businesses in this sector experienced declines of over 30%.

According to Mr. Ngo Thai Chan, Director of the Department of Agriculture and Environment, the sector plans to focus on producing high-quality rice varieties and applying science and technology to production and cultivation in 2026.

“This year, the seed center collaborated with Mr. Ho Quang Cua to produce the ST25 rice variety. As much as we produce, it sells out completely,” said Mr. Chan.

Concluding the meeting, Mr. Truong Canh Tuyen, Chairman of the People’s Committee of Can Tho City, emphasized that from 2011 to the present, the 2021-2025 period has seen the highest growth but still falls short of the requirements for rapid and sustainable development.

The Chairman of the People’s Committee of Can Tho City requested that the agriculture sector, when planning, assign commune-level officials to carefully review data. For Sector 2, regarding projects in industrial zones, the Management Board of Export Processing and Industrial Zones should promptly update data for the Statistics Bureau.

“The people expect us to work with a sense of responsibility, determination, and urgency to fulfill the tasks of 2026,” said Mr. Truong Canh Tuyen.
