The Ministry of Transport (MoT) has recently approved the adjustment to increase the maximum speed limit to 90 km/h, instead of the current 80 km/h, on 8 sections of 4-lane expressways. Specifically, these expressways include: Mai Son – QL45, QL45 – Nghi Son, Nghi Son – Dien Chau, Dien Chau – Bai Vot, Nha Trang – Cam Lam, Cam Lam – Vinh Hao, Vinh Hao – Phan Thiet, and Lao Cai – Kim Thanh.
The MoT has requested the Investment Management Department to be responsible for directing the management boards of project, and investors of phased-investment expressway projects with 4-lane divided by a median barrier (also known as restricted 4-lane expressways) to review the managed and temporarily operated routes, and check the technical factors to ensure they meet the specified operating speed of 90 km/h; adjust the operating speed in the traffic organization plan accordingly, and submit it to the Vietnam Road Administration for approval.

The adjustment of speed limit signs must ensure the necessary technical solutions for synchronous and safe operation.
For the 15-km Cao Bo – Mai Son expressway, due to the 4 bridges without continuous rigid median barriers, which cannot meet the required acceleration length, the MoT stated that the speed limit will not be increased until the road is upgraded and expanded to meet the technical requirements.
Based on the traffic organization plan developed and submitted by investors and managing units for approval, the Vietnam Road Administration will approve the revised traffic organization plans for projects that meet the conditions for speed limit increase. At the same time, the Road Management Units currently managing and operating phased-investment expressways will complete the necessary procedures to increase the operating speed to meet travel demand.
