A default setting in iOS 26 has sparked concern among cybersecurity experts. Recent analysis reveals that iPhone 15, iPhone 16, and iPhone 17 users are at risk of unauthorized data access when connecting to unverified USB-C accessories, particularly at public charging stations.

iOS 26 includes a security feature that safeguards iPhones when connected to USB-C accessories, preventing data extraction via compromised cables or devices. However, instead of defaulting to the most secure setting, “Ask for New Accessories,” the OS defaults to “Automatically Allow When Unlocked.”

With this setting, any USB-C accessory connected to an unlocked device can establish an immediate connection without user confirmation. Experts warn this creates a “security gap,” allowing malicious devices to operate covertly for a few seconds—sufficient time to steal data or install malware.

The risk is heightened when charging at airports, malls, or “free charging” stations, where hardware-tampered devices are more prevalent.

Immediate Actions for Users

To restore security, users can adjust settings in a few steps:

This change takes seconds but significantly reduces the risk of unauthorized data collection via USB-C. (Screenshot)

1. Open Settings

2. Select Privacy & Security

3. Access Wired Accessories

4. Switch to Always Ask or Ask for New Accessories

Some users report inability to modify this setting. Apple Support acknowledges the issue and promises a fix in the next update.

Until then, experts advise minimizing connections to untrusted cables or charging stations as a temporary but essential precaution.
