On February 7th, according to a reporter’s observation, the price of Cua Gach (a type of crab) in Cà Mau province is being purchased by traders at a price of 800,000 VND/kg, the best quality crab is priced at 400,000 VND/kg, and the fourth-quality crab is priced at 300,000 VND/kg…
Mr. Dư Thái Bình, Director of Dư Thái Bình Co., Ltd. (Năm Căn district, Cà Mau province), said that in the days before the price of Cua Gach crab was purchased at over 1 million VND/kg. Mr. Bình explained: “Today, the last working day of customs at Đông Hưng border gate and the Tet holiday closing caused the price of crab to decrease. However, the current price is still high and ensures a decent profit for crab farmers”.
Cà Mau is considered the “capital” of ocean crab farming in the country, with an area of over 250,000 hectares and a production capacity of 25,000 tons per year. Ocean crabs have brought in over 10,000 billion VND in revenue for Cà Mau province each year and are the second most important main industry after shrimp farming.
Farmer Nguyễn Văn Tình (from Năm Căn district) said that when released, the size of the baby crabs is only as small as peppercorns or peanuts… After about 6 months of farming in combination with fish farming, the crabs will reach a weight of over 300 grams per crab.
At this point, residents will use fishing nets or traps to harvest the crabs and then sell them to traders. “This year, Cà Mau farmers are excited because they can sell crabs at high prices and have a significant amount of money to spend for Tet. From the 20th day (lunar calendar) until now, I have earned nearly 20 million VND from selling marketable crabs,” Mr. Tình said.
