Fresh Rose Sale: Slow Buying Power on Valentine’s Day

This year, Valentine's Day on February 14th coincided with the 5th day of the Lunar New Year. As it was still during the holiday period, there were not many customers coming to buy flowers. Traders reported slow sales, with the price of roses dropping nearly 30% compared to the same period last year.

On February 14th (the 5th day of the Lunar New Year), at Ho Thi Ky flower market (District 10, Ho Chi Minh City), vendors have displayed beautiful rose bouquets to serve customers looking for Valentine’s Day gifts. Depending on the quantity of flowers and whether they are locally-grown or imported, prices range from 350,000 to 1 million VND per bouquet

Mr. Sy, the owner of Tường Vy flower shop, said that even though it is Valentine’s Day today, sales have not increased due to it falling on the 5th day of the Lunar New Year when people in Ho Chi Minh City are still on holiday and preparing to return to work tomorrow (February 15th). “I expect that in the evening, there will be more customers coming to buy flowers as gifts for their loved ones,” Mr. Sy shared.

One pre-arranged rose bouquet is priced at 350,000 VND.

Meanwhile, flower vendors express concerns as there are not many customers buying. Currently, 50 stems of Da Lat red roses are priced at only 250,000 VND, while during the same period last year, prices were around 450,000 – 500,000 VND. Therefore, this year, the price of fresh roses has decreased by almost half, but the demand is low.

Fresh roses in various colors have just arrived at the market in Ho Chi Minh City, eagerly awaiting customers to purchase them.

On many streets in Ho Chi Minh City, such as Nguyen Van Cu (District 5), Dien Bien Phu (District 3), Nguyen Thi Minh Khai, Tan Dinh (District 1), there are numerous sidewalk stands selling Valentine’s Day gifts. Among them, the majority are artificial roses, stuffed animal roses… Instead of fresh flowers.

“In previous years, I used to sell fresh flowers, but at the end of the day, I often had to discard them or sell them at a loss. This year, I anticipate that there will be a decrease in demand due to the difficult economic situation. Another reason is that February 14th is still during the Lunar New Year holiday, so I imported artificial flowers to sell. If they are not sold, I can keep them for other occasions without the fear of them wilting or going to waste,” Ms. Thanh, a seller of artificial flowers on Nguyen Van Cu Street (District 5) mentioned.

This year, the gift market also includes knitted flowers made entirely by hand, so these products are “one-of-a-kind” and priced from 50,000 VND per flower.

Flowers made of zinc velvet are also popular, with a relatively low price of only 30,000 VND per bouquet, consisting of 2-3 flowers.

The artificial roses are adorned with teddy bears and chocolate boxes in the center, adding richness and variety to the bouquets.

The pre-arranged artificial rose bouquets are beautifully decorated.
