Optimism Chains is preparing for the upgrade of Ecotone on March 14th, this improvement will integrate EIP-4844 to make transactions cheaper and faster.
OP Labs has disclosed an upcoming upgrade to revolutionize the Optimism (OP) network called “Ecotone”.
The team announced this move in a recent post on X, noting that the update is expected to be deployed on March 14th, pending approval from the Optimism Governance Agency.
This development will be a significant milestone for the OP network as Ecotone introduces major improvements to enhance the scalability and efficiency of the layer 2 solution.
The focus of the Ecotone upgrade will be the integration with Ethereum Improvement Proposal 4844. This EIP-4844 is a long-awaited protocol enhancement, also known as “proto-danksharding“, designed to use “blobs” for the Ethereum infrastructure.
The upgrade has pivotal significance in improving the existing resilience of data and reducing costs within the network. Essentially, the “blobs” represent efficiently processed large batches of data, thus alleviating pressure on the main Ethereum network and reducing transaction fees.
For the existing node configurations, adjustments will need to be made, including setting up a new Beacon endpoint. This step is crucial as after the activation of Ecotone, the batch transactions will be transmitted as 4844 blobs. These blobs can only be accessed by the Beacon nodes.
Furthermore, this upgrade provides a comprehensive set of steps to verify configurations and ensures that node operators are ready for the upgrade.
