BYD – the world’s second-largest electric vehicle battery manufacturer, with 15.8% of the global market share in 2023, has been used its batteries in electric cars and energy storage. However, they have never been used in motorcycles, bicycles, or other 2-wheeled vehicles.

That could soon change, as BYD announces plans to invest and develop batteries for 2-wheeled vehicles. A BYD subsidiary called FinDreams has recently stated in a WeChat post that they are going to produce safe and reliable batteries for the 2-wheeled market. FinDreams aims to collaborate with various parties to develop battery products that can be placed inside homes.

FinDreams declares, “Our mission is to help people use batteries without worrying.”

This announcement comes after a fire incident on February 23rd, in which 15 people lost their lives and 44 were injured in a residential building in Vu Hoa District, Nanking City. The fire is believed to have originated from areas where electric motorcycles were parked, although the exact cause is still under investigation. Nevertheless, this incident has sparked a heated debate in China over the safety of electric motorcycles. Since the fire, several Chinese cities have banned residents from parking 2-wheeled vehicles inside buildings.

The Chinese government has issued the document “Technical Safety Standards for Lithium-Ion Batteries of Electric Motorcycles”, addressing potential battery-related issues, including situations where the battery could experience unexpected impact such as compression, vibration, free-falling, or operating under special conditions such as low air pressure or extreme temperatures. Furthermore, criteria such as the battery pack’s fire resistance, handle durability, and water resistance are also outlined in the standards.

BYD has previously ventured into the electric motorcycle market. In July 2023, the company signed a contract with Singaporean 2-wheeler brand Scorpio Electric to assemble the X1, their first electric motorcycle for the Chinese market. Although the X1 is produced by BYD, it is not equipped with BYD’s LFP battery but instead uses Samsung’s. Additionally, in 2022, BYD collaborated with Spanish 2-wheeler brand Nerva to provide LFP batteries for their new electric motorcycle model. The Nerva Exe E-Scooter was launched in February of that year with a 5.76 kWh LFP battery pack capable of charging from 0-80% in 3.5 hours.
