Samsung, the giant tech company, to invest an additional $1 billion annually in Vietnam, after pouring in more than $22.4 billion over the past 17 years.

In 2023, the global economy continues to face challenges and the global mobile phone market has shrunk, which has affected Samsung's business operations. The Samsung Group's export revenue in Vietnam reached 55.7 billion USD.

Recently, the General Director of Samsung Vietnam, Choi Joo Ho, had a meeting with Deputy Prime Minister Tran Luu Quang. At the meeting, General Director Choi Joo Ho stated that in 2023, the global economy is still facing difficulties and the global mobile phone market contraction has affected Samsung’s business operations. The export of Samsung Vietnam reached 55.7 billion USD.

Samsung officially invested in Vietnam in 2008 by building a mobile phone manufacturing plant in Bac Ninh province. Through continuous investment activities in Thai Nguyen, Hanoi, and Ho Chi Minh City, Samsung currently operates 6 factories, 1 sales entity, and 1 research and development center.

In 2023, Samsung has made an additional investment of 1.2 billion USD, bringing the total investment capital in Vietnam to 22.4 billion USD. In addition, the General Director of Samsung Vietnam also mentioned that Samsung will continue to invest an additional 1 billion USD per year in Vietnam.

Samsung’s research and development center currently has 2,400 engineers working, of which Vietnamese engineers are the “core” force in researching AI features for the new Galaxy S24 phone, highly appreciated by Samsung for their capabilities.

The General Director of Samsung Vietnam, Choi Joo Ho, expressed the desire for the Vietnamese Government to continue improving the investment environment and creating favorable conditions for Samsung’s investment activities in Vietnam.

Regarding Vietnam, Deputy Prime Minister Tran Luu Quang highly appreciated Samsung’s investment activities in Vietnam, which have made positive contributions to Vietnam’s import-export turnover and economic development. He also affirmed that the Vietnamese Government always pays attention to and values improving the investment environment to facilitate long-term manufacturing and business activities of foreign enterprises in Vietnam.

In collaboration with NIC, Samsung Vietnam and NIC have signed a Memorandum of Understanding to cooperate and implement high-tech development activities for the younger generation of Vietnam – the ones who will lead the success of the Industrial Revolution 4.0 in Vietnam in the future.

Deputy Prime Minister proposed Samsung, with its experience and capabilities, to continue cooperating with NIC and support Vietnam in realizing the goal of training 50,000 semiconductor engineers by 2030.

General Director Choi Joo Ho said Samsung will continue to explore possibilities for expanding cooperation with NIC and support Vietnam in training semiconductor workforce. For workforce training activities, Samsung and the National University of Hanoi have signed a cooperation agreement with the goal of training about 40 outstanding students of the National University to become future leaders in the semiconductor field within 4 years.
