Testing the construction of the longest tunnel on the Quang Ngai – Hoai Nhon expressway.

On March 5th, a delegation from the Ministry of Transport led by Minister Nguyen Van Thang conducted an inspection of the construction progress of the northern tunnel (tunnel number 3) in Duc Pho town, Quang Ngai province. This is the longest tunnel on the East-North-South Highway project being constructed as part of the Quang Ngai-Hoai Nhon highway component project.

Inspecting at the North tunnel’s location (tunnel number 3), Deputy Chairman of the Council of Directors of Deo Ca Group Nguyen Tan Dong said that the Quang Ngai – Hoai Nhon Expressway, which is 88 km long, in addition to the road system being deployed for construction, the unit is also accelerating the construction of 60 out of 77 bridges, culverts; road fill reaching approximately 2.6 million m3. On the route, there are 3 tunnels (1, 2, 3) so far, tunnels number 1 and 2 have been excavated beyond the schedule by 3 months.

Tunnel number 3 is the longest one with a length of 3,200 m, until now, the left tunnel has been drilled a length of 635 m and the right tunnel has reached 634 m. Drawing experience from previous projects, Deo Ca Group has improved tunnel excavation methods and increased construction speed, making efforts to complete this special-grade road tunnel ahead of schedule (estimated in June 2025). At the same time, after the tunnel is completed, it will be used as a public road with a length of 700 m (tunnel number 2) instead of the originally proposed 3.6 km long public road running through many steep hills.

Minister Nguyen Van Thang commended the contractor and the investor for demonstrating the “under sun or rain” spirit to accelerate the construction progress of the Quang Ngai – Hoai Nhon component project. At the same time, he thanked the proactive participation of the local government and the people in the project area for giving up their land, assets for the investor, and the construction unit of the national key project.

Minister Nguyen Van Thang said that the Quang Ngai – Hoai Nhon Project is the largest among the 12 component projects that commenced in early 2023. On the route, there are 3 mountain tunnels which are great challenges for the project management board and the contractor, but with high determination throughout the year, the contractor has excavated 2 out of 3 tunnels on the route, contributing significantly to the overall progress of the project; among which, Deo Ca Group has applied many new construction methods, improved new tunnel excavation methods that have both boosted tunnel excavation progress and ensured better handling of incidents that might occur during the construction process, yielding great efficiency.

Transport Minister Nguyen Van Thang emphasized that the Quang Ngai – Hoai Nhon component project is an important transportation project of the East – West North – South expressway system, therefore, the project’s investor and contractor in collaboration with the local government should focus on resolving bottlenecks, increasing productivity at the construction site, considering this as an important political mission and joining hands together to bring the project to completion as scheduled, connecting with other expressway systems that are being invested in.
