Since the introduction of the iPhone 14 Plus by Apple in 2022, I (Philip Michaels) have never said anything nice about these 6.7-inch smartphones.
I quickly concluded that the Plus was just an oversized standard iPhone, nothing special, and even said that “there is no reason for it to continue to exist.” However, at this point, I admit that I was wrong.
The Plus models deserve a place among the best iPhones. They are truly excellent smartphones and there are many reasons for them to exist. And I hope the Plus will still be a part of the iPhone 16 lineup at Apple’s upcoming fall event.
And to answer the question of why the “turnaround,” I would like to present the compelling reasons below.
Large screen
Powerful battery
A larger-sized smartphone doesn’t just stop at a larger screen. It also means more space for a bigger battery. And a larger battery means an advantage for the iPhone Plus models as they have longer battery life after a single charge compared to standard models.
More space means a higher capacity battery.
Although Apple doesn’t talk much about the battery, thanks to analysts, we know that the iPhone 15 Plus has a 4,383 mAh battery compared to the 3,349 mAh of the standard iPhone 15.
Our tests (Tom’s Guide) also show that at a screen brightness of 150 nits, the iPhone 15 Plus can last over 3 hours longer than the standard iPhone 15 (the iPhone 15 Pro Max lasts about 12 minutes less than the iPhone 15 Plus)
The same is true for tests on the iPhone 14 Plus and other models in the same lineup. This means that if you own any model when buying the Plus, you will never have to worry about whether you can use it all day with just one charge or not.
Cheaper than the iPhone Pro Max
The iPhone 15 Plus and iPhone 15 Pro Max are similar in many aspects including the screen, battery… but they also have some important differences, especially in terms of features. However, the issue is that the iPhone 15 Pro Max is much more expensive than its sibling 15 Plus – possibly up to $300.
The significant amount of money saved mentioned above – though there will be no telephoto camera, titanium frame, and Action button – may impact users’ final decision.
More importantly, Apple tends to increasingly separate the Pro models from the rest of the iPhone lineup. And you can see that the iPhone Plus models as affordable big-screen options will only become more prominent.
This will be particularly true if the rumored Ultra version of the iPhone 16 becomes a reality – increasing the differentiation further.
