With its unique design, the Cybertruck is perhaps the most attention-grabbing model of vehicle at present, with Tesla’s production volume being much lower than the demand from the market. Because of this, according to Tesla’s terms and conditions, Cybertruck buyers are not allowed to resell their vehicles in order to make a profit in the first year.
If for any reason you need to resell the vehicle, Tesla requires the right to have the first right of refusal before you sell it to someone else. If you sell the vehicle without notifying Tesla, the company can sue you for a compensation fee of 50,000 USD (or more) and refuse to sell you any vehicle in the future.
That’s the regulation, but not everyone will comply. There have been recorded purchases of the Cybertruck on vehicle trading platforms for prices exceeding 200,000 USD, twice the price set by Tesla. There are even rumors that Ford bought a Cybertruck for nearly 250,000 USD, perhaps to study the competitor’s product.
In addition to the unaccounted purchases, there has recently been a case where a buyer of the Cybertruck had an intention to resell it and was caught by Tesla.
Recently, on a forum for Cybertruck owners, a user claiming to be a Cybertruck owner posted: “Be careful when reselling your Cybertruck! Tesla has found the listing of the vehicle for sale, canceled my other orders, and I might be put on a blacklist.”
The user stated that they listed their Cybertruck for sale on multiple websites for “market researching”. Afterwards, a Tesla employee contacted this user, informing them that their two other Cybertruck orders were canceled and the deposit refunded.
Furthermore, according to the post, Tesla warned this user not to place any additional orders, saying that the deposit will not be refunded if they continue to order vehicles in the future. The user mentioned that it is unclear whether this applies only to future Cybertruck purchases or to all Tesla vehicle purchases in general.
Due to the violation of Tesla’s regulations, the owner of this Cybertruck cannot do anything against the company. Compared to Tesla’s regulation, which states that a Cybertruck user may have to compensate up to 50,000 USD, perhaps the “penalty” that this owner has to endure is still relatively mild. Perhaps Tesla has decided to be lenient in this case because the new Cybertruck has only been listed for sale for research purposes and has not yet been transferred to a new owner.
