Last year, most of the world’s largest stock markets experienced strong growth. Based on data from S&P Dow Jones Indices, the infographic below features stock markets with a market capitalization of at least 1 trillion USD.
This data is calculated using the methodology of the S&P Global Broad Market Index (BMI), which includes over 14,000 stocks in developed and emerging stock markets as of February 29, 2024.
The United States continues to be the world’s largest stock market with a market capitalization of 52.6 trillion USD, an increase of over 6 trillion USD compared to the 46.2 trillion USD as of February 29, 2023.
In particular, the top 7 technology stocks in the United States (Magnificent 7) have a total market capitalization of 13.1 trillion USD, accounting for about 25% of the market. This number is larger than the market capitalization of all other stock markets worldwide. Over the past year, the Magnificent 7 has seen significant growth thanks to Nvidia’s stock. Thanks to the AI boom, Nvidia has joined the exclusive club of companies with a market capitalization of over 2 trillion USD.
After the United States, the next three positions are in Asia, including China, Japan, and India. Notably, the market capitalization of the Chinese stock market has remained relatively unchanged at 11.5 trillion USD.
The economic slowdown following the Covid-19 pandemic and the prolonged real estate crisis are factors that have made the Chinese stock market go through a difficult year. Despite the bleak growth prospects of the economy, the selling pressure on the Chinese stock market has recently eased thanks to the stabilizing measures implemented by the authorities. However, compared to the peak in 2021, the market capitalization of the Chinese stock market has decreased by approximately 6 trillion USD.
Meanwhile, the market capitalization of the Indian stock market has seen strong growth. The market capitalization of listed companies on Indian stock exchanges has increased by nearly 1 trillion USD in less than 3 years. As a result, the South Asian country is one of the best-performing emerging stock markets in the world.
