On April 26, 2023, the Prime Minister of Vietnam issued Decision No. 441/QD-TTg approving the General Urban Planning Task for Viet Yen Town, Bac Giang Province by 2045, at a scale of 1/10,000. The goal is for Viet Yen to meet the criteria to become a town by 2025. By 2030, it will meet the criteria for an urban area with the status of a provincial city of Bac Giang Province, with an urbanization rate of around 60-75% and 75-85% by 2045.

At the end of 2023, the Chairman of the National Assembly signed Resolution 938/NQ-UBTVQH15 of the National Assembly Standing Committee on the establishment of Viet Yen Town and its wards in Bac Giang Province. Accordingly, from February 1, 2024, Viet Yen officially became a town with a total natural area of 171.01 km2 and a population of 229,162 from Viet Yen District in Bac Giang Province.

The Chairman of Viet Yen District People’s Committee said that Viet Yen District became a town one year earlier than planned. After its establishment, Viet Yen Town has 17 administrative units at the commune level (including 9 wards and 8 communes).

According to the official website of Viet Yen Town in Bac Giang Province, Viet Yen is located in the southwestern gateway to the province and is in a relatively advantageous position for economic and social development. It is a hub for several major traffic routes, such as the Hanoi-Bac Giang Expressway, National Highway 17, National Highway 37, the North-South railway, and the Cau River waterway that connects provinces, cities, and major economic centers in the country, such as Hanoi City, Bac Ninh Province, Thai Nguyen Province, and others.

Viet Yen Town is located in the Hanoi-Hai Phong-Quang Ninh key economic region, along the economic development corridor on the Hanoi-Bac Giang Expressway. This provides favorable conditions for economic, cultural, and social exchange, trade, and investment attraction and creates opportunities for the development of a diversified economy, including industry, services, and commerce, especially industrial development.

In particular, with two economic axes: the North-South axis (along the Hanoi-Bac Giang Expressway) where many large-scale industrial parks and clusters have been and are being developed, and the East-West axis (along National Highway 37 and Ring Road IV), Viet Yen has become the most dynamic development zone in the province.

It is forecasted that by 2030, Viet Yen’s population will reach around 305,000 and 400,000 by 2045. The land area for urban construction is expected to be around 4,500-5,000 hectares in 2030 and 5,500-6,000 hectares by 2045.

Recognizing the importance of urban appearance, the People’s Committee of Viet Yen Town, Bac Giang Province, has emphasized from the outset that major projects always pose significant challenges and heavy political tasks, requiring high determination, dedication, intelligence, and effort to overcome difficulties and challenges and implement projects to ensure that the set goals and requirements are met.

Currently, Viet Yen is implementing more than 40 projects using public investment capital with a total investment of over 1,000 billion VND. Key projects include the Viet Yen District Cultural and Sports Complex Project; the 295B Flyover Construction Project on Ring Road IV; the connecting road from Provincial Road 298 to Thuong Lan Industrial Park; the connecting road from Bich Dong Ring Road to the Northeast Ring Road of Bac Giang City; the Party and Mass Organizations Building; and the District People’s Court Building.

In recent years, Viet Yen has been one of the leading districts in the province with a high economic growth rate. The economic structure has shifted significantly towards increasing the value of industry, construction, and services, while gradually reducing the proportion of agriculture, forestry, and fishery. Per capita income is high.

In particular, Viet Yen has emerged as a bright spot for investment attraction. It is home to a Foxconn factory, one of the world’s leading manufacturers of electronic components and computers.

In addition, Viet Yen focuses on attracting investment capital to industrial parks (IPs): Dinh Tram, Van Trung, Quang Chau, and others. The district currently has four IPs (Dinh Tram, Quang Chau, Van Trung, and Viet Han) and three industrial clusters (Van Ha, Hoang Mai, and Viet Tien) in operation, with two industrial clusters under infrastructure development (Tang Tien and Trung Son-Ninh Son). According to the plan by 2030, the district will have 11 IPs and five more industrial clusters than in 2021.
