Durian, the king of fruits, is usually quite expensive, with a typical fruit weighing between 2-4kg and costing around 200,000 VND per kg. This translates to a few hundred thousand to even a million VND for a single fruit, which can be a hefty expense for consumers.
However, a new variety of durian has recently hit the market, weighing in at just 300 grams to 1 kg per fruit. These mini durians are priced at approximately 90,000 – 180,000 VND per kg, making them a more affordable option for those who love the unique flavor of durian.
Ms. Hoang Hong Anh, a well-known online fruit seller in Hoang Mai, Hanoi, shared that mini durians have been imported to Vietnam for several years now. In previous years, their prices were higher than regular durians, making them less popular among buyers.
But this year, domestic durian prices have doubled, while mini durians remain affordable at around 85,000 VND per kg. This works out to be just over 100,000 VND per fruit, with the cheapest options costing only 50,000 VND. As a result, these miniature fruits are gaining popularity among consumers.
“These mini durians are a hot seller because they’re easy on the wallet,” Ms. Hong Anh said. “Since the beginning of the month, I’ve imported around 5 batches, each weighing 2-3 tons. They sell out as soon as they arrive. Some customers even buy dozens of fruits at a time to enjoy over an extended period.”
According to Ms. Hong Anh, there is currently a shortage of mini durians in the market, and she will have to wait almost a month for the next harvest to resume sales. She shared that these miniature fruits are imported from Thailand and are known for their thin skin, long arils, and consistent quality. The arils are a vibrant yellow, with a sweet and creamy flavor that durian lovers crave.
Mr. Hoang Huy, a resident of Cau Giay, Hanoi, recently purchased 4 mini durians for 310,000 VND, which works out to be a little over 70,000 VND per fruit, and each fruit had plenty of arils.
On average, these mini durians weigh between 500 grams and 700 grams, and each fruit contains 3 to 4 arils. While the seeds may be a bit larger than usual, the arils are exceptionally fragrant, sweet, and creamy, making them a delightful treat.
