Hanoi police have issued a warning about a scam involving impersonation of police officers and the use of fake public service software. On June 11, 2024, a Hanoi resident, Ms. T (DOB: 1983), received a call from someone claiming to be an officer from the Trung Hoa Ward police, Cau Giay District. The scammer informed her that her identification account had encountered issues and guided her to install fake public service software. As a result, she lost over VND 1.2 billion from her bank account. The Hanoi police are investigating the case and urge residents to be cautious of such scams.
The scam typically involves impersonators calling residents and claiming that their citizen identification cards have issues or that their personal data needs updating. They then urge residents to download fake public service software from a provided link. By doing so, the scammers gain control of the victim’s phone, allowing them to access their bank accounts and make unauthorized transactions.
The Hanoi police advise residents to be vigilant and never install any software or applications upon the request of unknown callers. Falling victim to this scam can result in the loss of personal information, financial losses, and unauthorized access to one’s mobile device. Residents are encouraged to report any suspicious activities or potential scams to their nearest police station for timely intervention and legal action.
