The Underground Tunnel Vision: Unveiling Hanoi’s Sixth Construction Site

The Hanoi People's Committee has approved the construction of an underground tunnel at the Co Linh intersection (Long Bien district). This project aims to develop a strategic transportation infrastructure, alleviating traffic conflicts and creating a seamless flow at this crucial junction.

The Co Linh – Vinh Tuy Bridge intersection is one of the city’s key transport hubs, serving as a major transit point for traffic from Ring Road 2 to several inter-provincial routes and congested inner-city areas.

Previously, after the opening of the second phase of Vinh Tuy Bridge, the Hanoi People’s Committee instructed relevant units to develop plans for an underpass at the Co Linh – Vinh Tuy Bridge intersection to alleviate traffic congestion and reduce traffic conflicts in the eastern and northeastern areas of Ring Road 2.

Accordingly, the sixth underpass at the Co Linh intersection (Long Bien district) has a total investment of VND 750 billion.

The underpass is expected to be constructed with reinforced concrete in the direction of Vinh Tuy – Long Bien and vice versa. The installation includes a closed tunnel, an open tunnel, retaining walls on both sides, access roads, and kerbs at both ends leading to the tunnel.

The tunnel’s length is calculated to be approximately 500 meters, with a width of about 7.75 meters for each direction (equivalent to two lanes for motor vehicles in each direction).

The design files and specifications for the tunnel are required to be similar to those of the already operational tunnels: Le Van Luong, Trung Hoa, and Thanh Xuan.

The project has a total investment of over VND 747.59 billion and is scheduled to be implemented from 2024 to 2026 by the Hanoi Transport Construction Investment Project Management Board.

According to forecasts, traffic volume through the Co Linh intersection will continue to increase over time. This reality underscores the critical and urgent need to construct an underpass to alleviate congestion at the Co Linh intersection and open up transportation corridors in the northeastern gateway to the capital.

The project aims to complete Ring Road 2 as per the master plan, integrating the construction of a reasonable transport infrastructure system to resolve conflicts at the intersection, providing seamless connectivity between surrounding roads, and gradually improving the transport infrastructure to reduce environmental pollution.

Once the tunnel is opened to traffic, the Co Linh – Vinh Tuy Bridge approach will become a three-level intersection, comprising an overpass, the existing intersection, and the underpass.
