A Transformative Force in the Hospitality Industry
In the 4.0 era, the integration of AI robots to replace humans in certain tasks and industries is an irreversible trend. The application of AI robots has significantly enhanced the efficiency of the hospitality industry, from data updates and process automation to guest services. AI robots are also being regarded as a “transformative force” in this industry. Many hotels and restaurants worldwide have employed AI robots in various operations, such as greeting guests, serving food, cleaning, and engaging in conversations with customers, offering novel experiences, increasing revenue, and reducing labor costs.
Humanoid robot staff at the front desk of Henn na Hotel Tokyo, Japan.
In Japan, the Henn-na Hotel chain, operated by Hotel Holdings, is renowned for being a pioneer in robot hospitality. They employ dozens of robots with diverse tasks. The humanoid robot at the reception greets guests in multiple languages (English, Japanese, Korean, and Chinese). The Unibo robot guides guests with simple conversations and assists in finding restaurants, supermarkets, and convenience stores. A Velociraptor dinosaur robot works as both a receptionist and an entertainer, arousing curiosity and delight among guests. Industrial robots are tasked with sorting and carrying luggage, while some androids handle housekeeping and coffee service.
Initially, the hotel chain introduced AI robots primarily to reduce staff costs. However, as time went on, these robots evolved in both appearance and functionality to become more intelligent and user-friendly, with added entertainment features that intrigued and captivated guests.

With its friendly interface and multilingual programming, this intelligent robot supports passengers in finding flight information, navigating to service counters, and locating departure and arrival gates, while also serving as a “model” for passenger check-ins. Incheon Airport plans to introduce self-driving robots from 2026, transforming the airport into one of the world’s smartest.
