Hyundai is reportedly developing an all-electric version of its Santa Fe SUV, alongside an all-new electric pickup truck. What sets these two vehicles apart is their range-extending engine option.
This system comprises a direct-drive electric motor for the wheels, paired with a small gasoline or diesel engine designed to act as a generator for the battery. This setup is said to be similar to Nissan’s e-POWER technology.
The range-extending engine setup is expected to feature in other Hyundai Group models in the future, such as the Genesis GV70 EV.
As for the pickup truck, Hyundai’s leadership has hinted at its future plans, with an expected launch timeframe of 2026-2027. This vehicle is rumored to be sized between the Ford Ranger and F-150, offering an estimated range of 530 km on a single charge.
The name of this pickup could be the Ioniq T7, according to Hyundai’s trademark filings, with ‘T’ standing for ‘Truck’. Additionally, Hyundai has also trademarked the name T10, but details about this model remain scarce.
According to Naver News, Hyundai dismantled a Tesla Cybertruck at its Namyang Research Center in South Korea last month. A Ford F-150 Lightning was also spotted with South Korean test plates near a Hyundai facility in July.
These moves suggest that Hyundai is studying its competitors’ offerings to accelerate its product development in this new field. The process was completed by the end of July.
This also indicates that Hyundai’s electric pickup truck will likely be targeted at the US market. Currently, the South Korean automaker offers the Santa Cruz pickup, but it hasn’t seen much success in this segment.
