The Hai Phong – Thai Binh coastal road project is almost 30 km long, with 20.8 km passing through Hai Phong city and 9 km through Thai Binh province. Once completed, it will play a crucial role in connecting the Southern Coastal Economic Zone of Hai Phong to the Thai Binh Economic Zone.

The Thai Binh Economic Zone spans over 30,000 hectares (300 sq. km) and is currently being developed by the province. It is considered the driving force behind Thai Binh’s economic, social, security, and defense development in the coming years.

Meanwhile, Hai Phong is studying the establishment of the Southern Coastal Economic Zone, which will cover 20,000 hectares (200 sq. km) in An Lao, Kien Thuy, and Tien Lang districts. The total investment is expected to range from VND 400,000 to 600,000 billion, equivalent to USD 16-25 billion. The construction of the Southern Coastal Economic Zone in Hai Phong is anticipated to commence in 2028.

The Hai Phong – Thai Binh coastal road is part of the Vietnamese coastal road that stretches from Quang Ninh to Thanh Hoa. The road starts at the intersection with Road 353 in Do Son district, Hai Phong city, and ends on National Highway 37 in Thai Thuy district, Thai Binh province. The photo shows the endpoint.

The project is implemented under the Build-Operate-Transfer (BOT) format with a total investment of approximately VND 3,800 billion. The investor is a joint venture between Construction Joint Stock Company No. 1 (CC1) and Investment and Construction Joint Stock Company Bui Vu. The company appointed to manage and implement the project is Hai Phong Coastal Road Investment Co., Ltd.

According to the design, the Hai Phong – Thai Binh coastal road has a 12-meter-wide carriageway with two lanes for motor vehicles and a speed limit of 80 km/h. Hai Phong city is investing to expand the road to four lanes within its jurisdiction.

The route includes two major bridges crossing the Van Uc and Thai Binh rivers, along with road overpasses. The largest is the Van Uc River Bridge, with an approved investment of over VND 800 billion. It is 2.24 km long and connects Tien Lang and Kien Thuy districts in Hai Phong city. The bridge is 12 meters wide and has a clearance height of 32.6 meters, ensuring smooth passage for ships.

The Thai Binh River Bridge connects Tien Lang district in Hai Phong city to Thai Thuy district in Thai Binh province. It is over one kilometer long, with a ship clearance height of 7 meters and a width of 40 meters, meeting the standards of a centrally-managed river.

Despite starting construction in 2017 and an expected completion in 2019, the Hai Phong – Thai Binh coastal road project is still unfinished, with an overall progress of about 80%.

On the construction site, the busiest area is the Thai Binh River Bridge, with a large number of workers, engineers, and machinery in action.

Many sections of the Hai Phong – Thai Binh coastal road are already in use by locals, although several parts remain as dirt tracks. The photo shows a section passing through Tu Son commune in Kien Thuy district, Hai Phong city.
