$1.2 Billion Needed to Relocate Da Nang Station and Construct New Hai Van Tunnel

The Vietnam Railways has proposed to the Ministry of Transport to establish a project for improving the railway system in the Hai Van Pass area and relocating the Da Nang Station in the 2026-2031 period. The estimated total investment is VND 19 trillion ($795 million), which will be allocated from the medium-term public investment capital for the 2026-2031 period.

Regarding the plan to relocate the entire railway system in Da Nang away from the city center as per the master plan, the city aims to move the Da Nang Station westward from its current location; and upgrade the existing railway line to run parallel to the east of the expressway, within the same corridor as the high-speed railway.

In addition, the railway sector will construct a freight station in the Kim Lien area to connect with Lien Chieu Port, with a planned investment phase until 2030 and beyond.

The relocation of the Da Nang Station out of the city center is considered urgent as the current station is located in a high-traffic area, causing traffic congestion, especially when trains enter and exit the station and cross major roads. It also creates noise and pollution, affecting the quality of life of nearby residents.

On the other hand, building a new Da Nang Station away from the city center will provide the railway sector with more space to develop related transport infrastructure, such as parking lots, warehouses, and more convenient connecting roads to neighboring areas, thereby improving the efficiency of freight and passenger transport.

Regarding the construction of a new railway tunnel through the Hai Van Pass, this will help reduce risks associated with the pass’s sharp curves, steep gradients, and treacherous terrain, ensuring the safety of passengers and cargo, especially during the rainy season.

Moreover, the current speed of trains passing through the Hai Van Pass is very slow due to the challenging mountainous terrain. Constructing a new tunnel will help reduce travel time, increase speed and transport capacity, thereby improving the efficiency of railway operations.

This project will help alleviate the bottleneck in the train’s throughput capacity on the section from Vinh to Nha Trang, and build a new tunnel to address the transport constraints caused by the railway line passing through the Hai Van Pass.

The “Heritage Road,” Vietnam’s Most Beautiful Route

With a length of over 100km, one side hugging steep mountains and the other overlooking the deep blue sea, and a winding road through the pass, the railway route through the Hai Van Pass from Thua Thien Hue to Da Nang offers a breathtaking experience for passengers.

Many people who have traveled on this railway line believe that the section through Lang Co and the Hai Van Pass is the most beautiful heritage road in Vietnam. The line runs alongside majestic mountains on one side and the vast ocean on the other, passing through a series of renowned heritage sites such as Hai Van Quan and Lang Co Bay, creating a truly impressive landscape.

The construction of this railway line is considered a miracle due to the challenging and treacherous terrain of the Hai Van Pass. The railway line crossing the pass, connecting Thua Thien Hue and Da Nang, is of similar length to the road, passing through the stations of Kim Lien, Hai Van Nam (Da Nang), Hai Van (located in the middle of the pass), Hai Van Bac, and Lang Co (Thua Thien Hue).

The railway line through the Hai Van Pass winds along the mountain slopes, featuring 6 tunnels and 18 bridges, with the shortest tunnel measuring 85m and the longest stretching to 600m.

Notably, the route through the Hai Van Pass has been ranked among the “10 most beautiful routes in the world.” The renowned American travel magazine, Travel + Leisure, published a list of the 10 most beautiful routes globally, and Vietnam’s Hai Van Pass secured the fourth position.

Despite its stunning scenery, the area around the tunnel on the pass has many sharp curves with small radii, steep gradients, and speed limits, affecting the safety and security of the railway. Therefore, the early improvement of the railway line, known as Vietnam’s most beautiful heritage road, is imperative.
