The General Statistics Office’s report on the socio-economic situation in August and the first eight months of 2024 revealed a slight increase in the total retail sales of goods and consumption services revenue. The revenue in August 2024 rose by 0.4% compared to the previous month and by 7.9% year-on-year.
For the first eight months of 2024, the total retail sales of goods and consumption services revenue increased by 8.5% year-on-year. Notably, revenue from accommodation and catering services rose by 14.3%, while tourism travel revenue surged by 26.2% during this period.
Specifically, the total retail sales of goods and consumption services revenue in August 2024, in current prices, was estimated at VND 526.6 trillion, a 7.9% increase year-on-year. This growth was driven by increases in various sectors: food and foodstuffs by 8.2%, household appliances and equipment by 6.5%, garments by 8.2%, accommodation and catering services by 9.7%, and tourism travel by 7.1%.
For the first eight months of 2024, the total retail sales of goods and consumption services revenue, in current prices, reached an estimated VND 4,148.4 trillion, representing an 8.5% increase compared to the same period last year (the same period in 2023 saw a 10.3% increase). Excluding price factors, the growth rate was 5.3% (compared to an 8.0% increase in the same period in 2023).
Retail goods revenue for the first eight months of 2024 was estimated at VND 3,199.7 trillion, accounting for 77.1% of the total and reflecting a 7.3% increase year-on-year (a 4.6% increase excluding price factors). Food and foodstuffs witnessed a 10.2% increase, while household appliances and equipment, garments, means of transport (excluding automobiles), and cultural and educational items rose by 10.1%, 8.7%, 4.0%, and 9.6%, respectively.
Some localities that experienced notable year-on-year increases in retail goods revenue during this period include Quang Ninh (10.6%), Hai Phong (9.3%), Can Tho (7.7%), Da Nang (7.6%), Ho Chi Minh City (6.8%), and Hanoi (6.3%).
Revenue from accommodation and catering services for the first eight months of 2024 was estimated at VND 481.2 trillion, making up 11.6% of the total and indicating a significant 14.3% increase compared to the same period last year. Several localities saw substantial year-on-year increases in this sector, including Quang Ninh (29.1%), Da Nang (23.3%), Thanh Hoa (21.5%), Khanh Hoa (19.1%), Hai Phong (15.1%), Can Tho (11.9%), Hanoi (11.4%), Ho Chi Minh City (8.9%), and Binh Duong (7.9%).
According to the report by the General Statistics Office, international arrivals to Vietnam have been on a steady rise. In August 2024, the country welcomed 1.43 million international visitors, marking a 17.7% increase year-on-year. For the first eight months of 2024, Vietnam received over 11.4 million international arrivals, a 45.8% increase compared to the same period last year, and a 1.0% increase compared to the pre-COVID-19 year of 2019.
Consequently, tourism travel revenue for the first eight months of 2024 was estimated at VND 40.9 trillion, contributing 1.0% to the total and reflecting a substantial 26.2% increase year-on-year. Ho Chi Minh City led the growth with a 42.2% increase, followed by Da Nang (38.6%), Can Tho (33.7%), Hanoi (29.7%), Quang Ninh (21.0%), and Binh Duong (18.5%).
Passenger transport in August 2024 is estimated to have served 442.0 million passengers, a 1.9% increase compared to the previous month, with 24.9 billion passenger-kilometers, a 2.5% increase. For the first eight months of 2024, passenger transport served an estimated 3,234.3 million passengers, a 7.5% increase year-on-year, with 183.0 billion passenger-kilometers, a 12.7% increase.
Cargo transport in August 2024 is estimated to have carried 215.1 million tons of cargo, a 1.3% increase compared to the previous month, with 47.1 billion ton-kilometers, a 0.5% decrease. For the first eight months of 2024, cargo transport carried an estimated 1,686.3 million tons of cargo, a 13.0% increase year-on-year, with 351.2 billion ton-kilometers, an 11.8% increase.
Revenue from other services for the first eight months of 2024 was estimated at VND 426.6 trillion, accounting for 10.3% of the total and indicating a 9.4% increase year-on-year.
