The Perfect Storm: Airlines Cancel Over 300 Flights as Typhoon YAGI Approaches

According to the Vietnam Aviation Authority, Typhoon YAGI is expected to impact approximately 240 domestic and 70 international flights over the coming days. In anticipation of the storm, local airlines have proactively canceled several flights to prioritize safety as Typhoon No. 3 makes landfall.

Following the directives from the Civil Aviation Authority of Vietnam, Van Don Airport (Quang Ninh), Cat Bi (Hai Phong), Noi Bai (Hanoi), and Tho Xuan (Thanh Hoa) have announced temporary closures on September 7th, 2022, to ensure safety amid the approach of Typhoon No.3.

In response to this development, domestic airlines have informed passengers of expected flight disruptions to and from the aforementioned airports on Wednesday.

Specifically, Vietjet has decided to cancel 67 flights to and from Noi Bai International Airport (Hanoi) between 10 am and 7 pm on September 7th. On the same day, the airline will also suspend 18 flights to and from Cat Bi Airport (Hai Phong) from 5 am to 4 pm and four flights to and from Tho Xuan Airport (Thanh Hoa) from 12 pm to 10 pm. As for Van Don Airport (Quang Ninh), flights will be halted between 4 am and 4 pm.

Several flights to and from the affected airports will be canceled or delayed due to Typhoon No. 3.

Bamboo Airways has also adjusted its flight schedule, canceling 14 flights on September 7th. These include the QH1540/1547 route from Ho Chi Minh City to Hai Phong and back, QH1421/1422 from Hanoi to Dalat and back, QH103/104 from Hanoi to Danang and back, QH1213/1212 from Hanoi to Quy Nhon and back, QH1415/1416 from Hanoi to Cam Ranh and back, and QH242/255/244/275 from Ho Chi Minh City to Hanoi and back.

Meanwhile, Vietnam Airlines advises passengers to closely monitor typhoon updates and plan their travels accordingly. The airline assures that affected passengers will be notified via their provided contact details.

Prior to this, the Ministry of Transport instructed the Civil Aviation Authority of Vietnam to direct airports and airfields to implement preventive measures against typhoons and floods. This includes inspecting and ensuring the safety of airport infrastructure, information systems, and command and control processes, as well as formulating plans to minimize potential damage caused by the typhoon.

Airlines are closely monitoring the typhoon’s progress and are prepared to make further adjustments to their schedules or flight routes to ensure the utmost safety. Depending on the typhoon’s trajectory and intensity, additional airports within the affected region may also suspend operations.

As of the latest update from the National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting, Typhoon No.3’s eye is located at approximately 19.4 degrees north latitude and 111.9 degrees east longitude, about 105 km from Hainan Island (China) and 550 km from Quang Ninh province.
