From September 9 to 11, heavy rains caused severe flooding in Hanoi’s inner city and surrounding areas. The Nam An Khanh Urban Area in Hoai Duc District was particularly affected, with localized flooding reported.

Following the intense rainfall, a Tien Phong reporter observed on September 12 that the floodwaters had receded rapidly, allowing residents to move around the area once again.

The entire row of villas along Le Trong Tan Street was submerged, with water infiltrating many homes and flooding basements and first floors. Due to the severe flooding, the power supply to Zone A of the Geleximco Urban Area was interrupted for two days, on September 10 and 11.

As soon as the power was restored, many businesses had to use pumps to remove the water. Residents shared that the basements were flooded with over 2 meters of water, and it would take an entire day to pump out the water using small-capacity machines.

Since the early morning, numerous households have hired people to help pump out the water so that they can resume their business operations as soon as possible.

Mud and garbage litter the inner roads of the area.

Residents are actively cleaning up the area to resume their business activities.

Nguyen Khang, a 37-year-old man who rents a property in the area to run a food business, shared that he had to purchase a high-capacity water pump to remove the water from his basement. “I’ve been using the high-capacity pump since the evening of September 11. I’ve already spent over VND 1 million on fuel for the pump, and it’s still a challenging situation,” said Khang.

In this urban area, the basements are designed lower than the road level, so during prolonged heavy rains, water flows into the basements despite residents’ efforts to block it with steel plates. Homes without pumps experienced near-complete basement flooding, resulting in significant damage to their property.

The basements of several eateries in the Nam An Khanh Urban Area were flooded, with refrigerators, plastic boxes, and other catering equipment floating in the water.

According to regulations, urban development must include synchronized technical infrastructure, including drainage. However, many newly developing urban areas in Hanoi have become hotspots for flooding and pollution.
