Apple has always been proud of its new chips inside iPhones, but there’s one specification the company never publicly discloses: RAM capacity. However, with the launch of the iPhone 16, Apple has made an exception for the first time.

Apple advertised the new iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Pro as the first iPhones designed to support Apple Intelligence with the A18 and A18 Pro chips. In a recent interview with YouTuber Geekerwan, Johny Srouji, Apple’s senior vice president of Hardware Technologies, provided more details about the iPhone 16 and Apple Intelligence, including confirmation that all four iPhone 16 models feature 8GB of RAM.

Last year, the iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus had 6GB of RAM, while the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max boasted 8GB. It is believed that this was one of the reasons why the iPhone 15 Pro models could run Apple Intelligence, while the standard iPhone 15 models could not. This year, all four iPhone 16 models can run Apple Intelligence, partly due to their uniform 8GB RAM configuration.

All four iPhone 16 models are equipped with 8GB of RAM, in addition to the A18 and A18 Pro chips.

In the interview, Mr. Srouji explained that Apple Intelligence was one of the reasons for the increased RAM, but he also noted that other applications would benefit as well:

“We have a lot of data that tells us what will bring a certain feature, and Apple Intelligence is one of the very, very important features that we want to integrate.”

“We looked at different configurations, both for computation and memory bandwidth as well as memory capacity. And then we make the right trade-offs and balance about what really matters the most. So, Apple Intelligence is a key feature that led us to believe that we need to reach the 8GB mark.”

Mr. Srouji stated that “8GB is the sweet spot”

“But that being said, 8GB will help a lot in a number of other applications, including gaming. So, I think that’s going to be really, really beneficial.”

“Another thing to note is that this is one of the benefits of the full integration of software, silicon, and product. Our excellent software team will optimize not just for computation but also for the memory of each application. So, they will not waste memory.”

“So, we take all of these considerations and make the decision that 8GB is the sweetest spot for us.”
