On September 20, in Hanoi, Minister of Industry and Trade Nguyen Hong Dien and Minister of Science and Technology (S&T) Huynh Thanh Dat co-chaired a meeting on the development of standards and technical regulations related to electric vehicle charging stations.

Meeting on the development of standards and technical regulations for electric vehicle charging stations

Reporting at the meeting, Director of the Industry Department Pham Nguyen Hung, said that in Vietnam, a number of enterprises are producing and assembling electric cars such as Vinfast with battery electric vehicles (BEV), Hyundai Thanh Cong with battery electric vehicles (BEV) and hybrid electric vehicles (HEV), Thaco with hybrid electric vehicles (HEV) and plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEV), and TMT with mini-BEVs.

In 2023, a total of 15,676 BEVs and 5,220 HEVs/PHEVs were sold in Vietnam. In the first six months of 2024, a total of 17,536 BEVs were sold in Vietnam, including 17,482 domestically produced and assembled vehicles and 54 imported ones.

With the rapid development of electric cars in recent years, many businesses have expressed their interest in the market for providing equipment and services for electric vehicles, especially charging stations for electric cars in Vietnam.

Speaking at the meeting, Minister of Science and Technology Huynh Thanh Dat, said that Vietnam is also in the race to build infrastructure for charging stations, and thanks to the strong investment of VinFast, Vietnam is becoming one of the countries with the leading number of charging ports in the region and the world. With VinFast’s charging stations alone, the country is expected to have about 150,000 charging ports across all 63 provinces and cities according to the plan.

The growth rate of charging stations in the recent period is much higher than that of countries in the region and countries with large charging networks such as the US and South Korea.

Therefore, Minister Huynh Thanh Dat believes that if there is no timely policy support for the development of the charging station network and incomplete technical standards and regulations related to charging stations, there will be a lack of synchronization and unity in the deployment of the national charging station system.

According to Minister Dat, the Vietnamese national standards system does not yet include Vietnamese standards for electric vehicle charging systems.

Regarding the Ministry of Science and Technology, Minister Nguyen Hong Dien proposed that, in addition to the existing general standards and regulations, the Ministry should soon develop specific standards and technical regulations for charging stations/pillars. This needs to be implemented through an expedited process to be completed by September 2024.

Along with that, Minister Nguyen Hong Dien suggested that the Ministry of Construction and the Ministry of Transport supplement the planning of charging stations in all buildings, residential areas, and highway rest stops. Local authorities also need to review and supplement possible locations for the construction of electric vehicle charging stations.
