VinFast Ventures into Electric Buses: A New Model Unveiled

In addition to manufacturing personal vehicles, VinFast is also investing in electric buses, with one model currently in operation across many localities in Vietnam. Soon, another electric bus model may be heading into production.

Specifically, an electric bus model appeared in the July 2024 issue of the Industrial Property Gazette regarding industrial designs. This bus model stands out for its large size and 3 doors.

In reality, the design of this bus was submitted for registration back in November 2023 and was accepted for protection in July. This is an important step in ensuring that the vehicle’s design is unique and does not infringe on any protected products.

With protection granted, this electric bus model has moved a step closer to commercial production.

According to the information in the gazette, the design of this electric bus is the brainchild of three foreign designers: Ozkan Yilmaz, Ali Zengin, and Roberto Piatti. While the first two designers are Turkish, Roberto Piatti is Italian. Interestingly, Roberto Piatti is also the name of the founder and CEO of Torino Design, a renowned Italian car design studio.

Torino Design has been involved in designing several VinFast models, most notably the VF 6 and VF 7, a duo that has received praise for their aesthetics. These compact crossovers are considered strategic models in VinFast’s global sales plan as they target two of the hottest segments in the market.

This newly protected electric bus model differs from the one currently in operation. Aside from a simpler design, it features 3 doors, enhancing its potential as a public transport option.

In Vietnam, single-door buses are typically used for tourist transportation or interprovincial travel, while public transport buses mostly have 2 doors, except for a few long-route lines with high demand that are equipped with 3-door buses.

Worldwide, 2-door buses are more common than 3-door ones due to their maneuverability. Nonetheless, the presence of 3 doors can be a significant incentive for commuters to choose public transportation.

Single-door buses are most useful for routes with minimal or no stops to pick up or drop off passengers, as the time required for boarding and alighting through a single door can be lengthy. Buses with multiple doors reduce passenger boarding and alighting time, making them more suitable for public transportation.

Adding more doors to a bus design means sacrificing seating capacity, but this can be offset by providing more standing room, thus increasing transportation efficiency. In Singapore, some public transport routes utilize 3-door buses to distribute passengers more evenly throughout the vehicle, further enhancing efficiency.

A video of a VinFast electric bus surfaced earlier this year.

A video that surfaced on social media earlier this year caught the attention of many. It featured a silver bus bearing the VinFast logo and the VinBus nameplate. This bus shared several exterior similarities with the model featured in the gazette.

VinFast has not yet made any official announcements regarding the launch of a new electric bus model in the near future.
