Proposed Expansion of Lien Chieu Port, Danang

The Lien Chieu Port project in Danang is set to undergo a significant expansion, as proposed. The port will comprise three distinct berths: a container terminal, a general and bulk cargo berth, and a liquid and gas cargo berth.

Specifically, the container berth will feature eight berths with a total length of 2,750 meters, accommodating vessels up to 18,000 teus (200,000 DWT), and a 700-meter berth for ships up to 5,000 tons.

By 2030, the container terminal is expected to develop from two berths to four. Two of these berths will cater to cargo throughput ranging from 7.5 million tons to 11.9 million tons, while the remaining two will be tailored to meet the demands of international container transshipment.

Danang proposes a plan to adjust the planning of Lien Chieu Port to include three berths.

The general and bulk cargo berth will consist of six berths with a total length of 1,550 meters, serving vessels up to 100,000 DWT, and a 500-meter berth for ships up to 5,000 tons. Post-2030, this berth will facilitate the functional transition of the Tien Sa and Tho Quang berths and accommodate cargo throughput requirements in the area.

The liquid and gas cargo berth will comprise eight berths. During the phase leading up to 2030, four berths will be developed to relocate existing floating buoys, and one to two berths will be dedicated to newly constructed LNG and LPG storage facilities in Lien Chieu, aligning with the national infrastructure planning for oil, gas, and fuel reserves.

The Danang People’s Committee has requested the Ministry of Transport to consider and approve this proposal to expedite the necessary procedures for attracting investors, in line with Resolution No. 136 of the National Assembly on urban governance and pilot mechanisms and policies for the city’s special development.

The Lien Chieu Port project is located in Hoa Hiep Bac Ward, Lien Chieu District, Danang, spanning an area of 450 hectares.

The project consists of two components, with Component A focusing on shared infrastructure. This component, costing over VND 3,400 billion, is funded by the central and city budgets and was inaugurated in late 2022. As of September 2024, the project has achieved 70% completion in terms of construction volume.

Component B, attracting private investment, includes eight container berths (with a total berthing length of 2,750 meters for vessels ranging from 50,000 to 200,000 DWT), six general cargo berths (total berthing length of 1,550 meters for vessels from 50,000 to 100,000 DWT), berths for river-sea vessels, and port hinterland. The estimated investment cost is VND 48,304 billion.

Several prominent investors have expressed interest in the Lien Chieu Port project, including India’s Adani Group and Japan’s Sumitomo Group.
