At the press conference on Ho Chi Minh City’s socio-economic issues up to September 26, the progress of the Rach Chiec National Sports Complex project was shared by Mr. Vo Ho Hoang Vu, Chief of Office of the Department of Culture and Sports. According to him, on October 15, the Department of Culture and Sports, in collaboration with ITPC, will organize an investment promotion conference for projects in the fields of culture and sports. This includes inviting investments for 16 projects within the Rach Chiec National Sports Complex, with a total expected investment of VND 20,960 billion.

Prior to this, the Department of Culture and Sports had submitted to the People’s Committee of Thu Duc City for consideration, appraisal, and approval of the 1/2000 planning project for the Rach Chiec National Sports Complex in An Phu Ward, Thu Duc City. After the approval of the master plan for Thu Duc City until 2040, the People’s Committee of Thu Duc City will guide the Department of Culture and Sports in submitting the dossier for appraisal and approval of the project in accordance with regulations.

The Rach Chiec National Sports Complex has been in the works since its investment policy was approved in 1994. According to the 1/2000 plan approved in August 2010, the project covers an area of 227 hectares, including the main project – the Rach Chiec National Sports Complex, with the Department of Culture, Sports, and Tourism as the investor, spanning over 180.73 hectares. The remaining area of nearly 46.27 hectares belongs to component projects of other investors.

Strategically located in An Phu Ward, Thu Duc City, the Rach Chiec National Sports Complex is bordered by the remaining area of the golf course, sports, and residential project, as well as the Zone 2 of the Saigon Sports City project to its east; Hanoi Highway, East-West Boulevard, and Rach Ba Dat canal to its west; Rach Chiec River to its north; and Ho Chi Minh City – Long Thanh – Dau Giay Expressway to its south.

In May 2018, the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Planning and Architecture announced the results of the selection of the planning project for the Rach Chiec National Sports Complex, with the winning proposal submitted by Sasaki, covering an area of approximately 180.73 hectares.

The Rach Chiec National Sports Complex is envisioned to be a hub for hosting regional and international sports events, as well as a sports, cultural, and tourist park serving the public. A prominent feature within the complex is the Unification Monument Square, which is connected to the Sports Square and has direct access to Hanoi Highway and the main road leading into the complex. Other facilities include training areas, an indoor cycling stadium, a moto racing track combined with an outdoor football field, and more. Back in 2018, the city anticipated that the complex would host the 2021 Southeast Asian Games, also known as Sea Games 31, with the participation of approximately 7,000 athletes from 11 Southeast Asian countries.
