The NLD newspaper recently reported that the 1688 e-commerce platform (a leading wholesale trading platform in China managed by the Alibaba Group) – the iOS version – now supports the Vietnamese language.

On the home screen, 1688 suggests products in Vietnamese, such as Cross slippers, women’s fashion, cosmetics, leather sandals, and computers.
Other categories like payment, promotions, and beauty are also displayed in Vietnamese, making it easier for users to search for the products they want to buy, similar to searching on local e-commerce platforms in Vietnam.
Previously, since August, Taobao – another e-commerce platform under Alibaba – has launched a program offering international free shipping for fashion items. In Vietnam, the Taobao app does not yet support Vietnamese, but it does allow shipping to Vietnamese addresses.
Reuters also reported that YouTube Shopping has been operating in South Korea and the US and plans to expand into Southeast Asia, including Vietnam…
In a related development, the Ministry of Industry and Trade is seeking feedback on the Vietnam Retail Market Development Strategy for the period up to 2030, with a vision towards 2045.
Notably, in terms of e-commerce development, the Ministry intends to continue reviewing e-commerce laws, with a focus on adding specific regulations for cross-border e-commerce, which is becoming increasingly popular and challenging to control.
Additionally, the Ministry aims to finalize a legal framework to facilitate businesses in operating technology platforms and developing models, solutions, and e-commerce services. There will also be an emphasis on enhancing public services for e-commerce.
The goal is to create a healthy, competitive, and sustainable e-commerce market in Vietnam.
Particularly, the Ministry plans to expand the consumption of Vietnamese goods domestically and internationally through e-commerce applications.
By 2030, Vietnam aspires to become one of the top three countries in Southeast Asia regarding e-commerce market development.
Looking ahead to 2045, the Ministry of Industry and Trade is working on a legal framework for the emergence and use of digital currency to support online transactions, especially in e-commerce.
