A decade of determination: Farmer strikes gold with horseshoe crab farming in Bac Lieu. Since 2014, Mr. Ho, a farmer from Bac Lieu, has successfully established a large-scale, modern horseshoe crab farm with over 3,000 square meters of land, capable of housing 8,000–10,000 crabs.

Before achieving this success, Mr. Ho had tried his hand at crocodile farming for a decade with little success. However, after learning about the profitability of horseshoe crab farming, he decided to take a leap of faith and invest in this venture.

Over the years, Mr. Ho recognized the potential of this unique species and decided to invest boldly in its farming. To expand his horseshoe crab farm, he imported crabs from Thailand for both sales and breeding purposes. Today, his farm consistently maintains a population of over 5,000 adult and juvenile crabs.

Annually, his farm imports horseshoe crab larvae from Thailand for breeding and commercial purposes.

While the economic value of Thai horseshoe crabs may be lower than their Vietnamese counterparts, they boast a faster growth rate and are more abundant, with a survival rate of up to 85%.

Sharing his secrets to success, Mr. Ho confided to Dan Viet Newspaper: “With my crocodile farming experience and existing infrastructure, I transitioned to horseshoe crab farming and achieved remarkable results.”

In addition to sourcing crabs from within Vietnam, Mr. Ho has established connections in Thailand to ensure a steady supply of crabs for breeding and expanding his farm. He also sells these crabs to local farmers.

After mastering the art of raising horseshoe crabs in cement ponds, Mr. Ho ventured into glass tank farming to fatten the crabs for commercial purposes.

To ensure the crabs’ survival, banana trees and ripe bananas are soaked in the tanks for 2–4 weeks before introducing the crabs. Afterward, the tanks are cleaned and filled with water adjusted to a pH of 7 before releasing the crabs.

At Mr. Ho’s farm, the horseshoe crabs are of exceptional quality. Typically, he chooses to farm Thai horseshoe crabs, which are less expensive than their Vietnamese counterparts but still offer high economic returns.

Through his years of experience, Mr. Ho has gained valuable insights into successfully farming these arthropods. He emphasizes the critical importance of selecting healthy crabs, free from deformities or excessive fat. Additionally, he highlights the need for distinct farming methods for larvae and commercial crabs.

Annually, Mr. Ho sells 30,000–40,000 horseshoe crab larvae, with each crab priced at VND 350,000, and meat selling for VND 400,000–460,000 per kilogram. This enterprise earns him nearly VND 2 billion in annual profits.

His farm has completed the necessary paperwork to export horseshoe crab meat and larvae to foreign markets. Soon, Mr. Ho will fulfill his first order of horseshoe crabs to Japan.

Similarly, Mr. Tran Minh Quan, a farmer in Phong Dien District, has also achieved financial success through horseshoe crab farming. In addition to breeding crabs in cement ponds and selling larvae, Mr. Quan has invested in a pond to farm meat crabs, supplying the market with 300–400 crabs daily. On average, he earns VND 1 billion annually from selling larvae and meat crabs.

Over a decade ago, Mr. Quan started with just 100 horseshoe crab larvae, and today, he proudly owns a renowned farm for breeding and raising horseshoe crabs in Can Tho.

Mr. Tran Minh Quan also heads the Quan Tien Horseshoe Crab Cooperative, comprising 20 members, supplying the market with thousands of horseshoe crab larvae and meat crabs annually.
