Gen Z Bankers: Redefining the Industry

Thu Thuy, a 1999-er, joined Saigon – Hanoi Commercial Joint Stock Bank (SHB) as a recruitment collaborator after graduating from university in 2021. What impressed her the most was the professional and friendly work environment at SHB, with colleagues always being amicable and supportive. This was a stark contrast to her previous perception of banks as “stiff, somewhat antiquated, and offering little opportunity for freshers.”

Experiencing the wonderful work environment with ample learning and development opportunities, Thu Thuy decided to stay with the bank long-term. The once collaborator has now become SHB’s recruitment specialist, exuding much more confidence and maturity.

“When my department head suggested that I take a course on recruitment brand development, a question popped into my head, ‘Do they really trust me?’. And that was the moment I felt like I belonged at SHB,” Thuy shared.

Hoang Lam, born in 2000, worked in a different field before interning at SHB starting May this year. Contrary to the common perception of interns as “tea-making, water-fetching” lackeys, Lam was welcomed by the staff at the Hanoi branch’s corporate customer department, who offered him practical work opportunities and provided enthusiastic guidance.

“I learned a lot during my internship at SHB, especially time management skills. The passion and enthusiasm of the bank’s employees for their work have inspired me greatly,” said Hoang Lam.

Young people like Thuy and Lam belong to the Gen Z group – a generation that is gradually entering the labor market and will become the main workforce of the banking industry in the future. According to a report by PwC Vietnam, this group will account for nearly a third of Vietnam’s working-age population by 2025.

Gen Z-ers often seek organizations that take the lead in fulfilling social responsibilities

Born in an era of technological and internet explosion, Gen Z exhibits distinct characteristics compared to previous generations. They are highly regarded for their creativity, dynamism, and critical thinking. Gen Z-ers are also keen on personal and professional development, often proactively seeking training and experiential opportunities to enhance their skills and knowledge.

Survey results indicate that Gen Z employees tend to seek a work-life balance and value flexibility more than previous generations. Additionally, they emphasize transparency and purpose in their work and prefer to work for organizations that lead in fulfilling social responsibilities and contribute significantly to the country’s development.

SHB – Crafting a Modern and Professional Work Environment

As one of the five largest private joint-stock commercial banks in Vietnam, SHB has always prioritized human resource development and provided career opportunities for young people.

Mr. Do Quang Vinh, Vice Chairman of the Board of Directors and Deputy General Director of SHB, shared that when recruiting positions related to transformation and digitalization, the average age of new SHB employees has become much younger, including some from the Gen Z cohort.

“I was surprised to find that these young people already possess the knowledge and experience to meet the job requirements,” said Mr. Vinh.

According to Mr. Vinh, today’s youth seek a civilized, modern, and flexible work style, with room for creative development. Understanding this, SHB is striving to create an “unlimited” work environment, aiming to build a Bank of Future model.

Workplace at SHB

SHB has been building a modern work environment with the new Agile working method, internationally-standardized office design, and has been recognized by Asia Awards Organization for having the “Best Workplace in Asia.”

Last August, the bank was also honored as the “Best Workplace in Asia 2024” by HR Asia Magazine for the fourth time. Additionally, in 2024, SHB was recognized as the “Bank with the Most Diverse, Fair & Inclusive Workplace in Vietnam” by Finance Asia Magazine. These awards testify to the bank’s commitment and efforts in fostering a friendly, dynamic, and innovative work environment.

Vice Chairman of the Board, Mr. Do Quang Vinh, emphasized that SHB aims to build a modern workplace, but more importantly, a cohesive organization that binds its people and upholds the beautiful traditions and cultural values throughout its 30-year history. The bank is on a journey to develop and promote a 6T culture, based on six core values: Heart, Trust, Faith, Knowledge, Wisdom, and Vision.

SHB is undergoing a comprehensive and robust transformation, with one of its four critical pillars being “People as the Subject.” The bank continuously enhances the quality of its human resources through various internal training programs. SHB employees are provided with opportunities for holistic development, leading to improved work efficiency and service quality. This not only contributes to individual success but also drives the bank’s sustainable development, propelling SHB to greater heights.
