Along the Ha Thanh River in Quy Nhon City, the atmosphere is bustling from morning to night these days as florists are busy hammering stakes, pruning buds, and grooming flower pots to supply the market. The florists by the Ha Thanh River are mainly residents of Dong Da Ward, with a few households from other places renting land to grow flowers. Photo: Truong Dinh.

Le Thi Thanh Xuan, 70, shared that her family has been growing flowers for the Tet holiday for over 30 years. This year, they planted 800 pots, and the weather has been favorable since sowing, allowing the plants to grow well and produce many buds. To meet the Tet flower market demand, Xuan had to hire six additional people to help with staking in recent days. Photo: Truong Dinh.

“Usually, we start selling around the 22nd of the twelfth lunar month. Part of the flowers are picked up by flower traders directly from the garden, and the rest are sold at a rented space on Nguyen Tat Thanh Street,” Xuan said. “So far, the weather has been favorable, but we don’t know what it will be like closer to Tet. We hope for good weather so that florists can have a prosperous new year,” she added. Photo: Truong Dinh.

According to locals, flower care for the Tet holiday is a short-term job, so they also take on this work to earn extra income. Photo: Truong Dinh.

The florists also shared that growing flowers for Tet is not a simple or easy task. It requires dedication, attention to detail, and loving care to produce vibrant and healthy flowers. Photo: Truong Dinh.

Further upstream along the Kon River, the Binh Thanh flower village in Tay Son District, Binh Dinh Province, is also bustling with activity. This is a crucial time for florists, as they begin using special care techniques to ensure that thousands of chrysanthemum pots bloom in time for the Tet holiday. Photo: Nguyen Gia.

As Binh Dinh is in its rainy season, and it gets dark early, the chrysanthemum gardens in Binh Thanh Village start lighting up around 6 pm, creating a magical and vibrant atmosphere in the rural area. Photo: Nguyen Gia.

Le Cuong, 55, from Binh Thanh Village, shared that his family plants nearly 1,000 chrysanthemum pots for the Tet holiday each year. To ensure the flowers are ready for Tet, florists need experience and must time the use of grow lights correctly. According to Cuong, the lights are kept on all night to keep the plants awake, as they produce buds when they “sleep.” To control bud production, florists turn off the lights when they want the plants to produce buds for the Tet holiday.
