The community of San Diu ethnic minority group in Tien Yen district, Quang Ninh province, recently organized the Den Duc Ong Hoang Can Festival, a cultural and sports event.

A highlight of the festival was the “Best Crab” contest, a first-of-its-kind event in the district. The contest aimed to honor and promote the potential of aquaculture and the renowned crab of Hai Lang commune, specifically, and Tien Yen district, in general.

Eight teams from different villages in Hai Lang commune participated in the contest. They competed in various challenges to select the best male crab, best female crab, and best crab couple.

Additionally, the teams had to showcase their speed and skills in a crab-tying competition.

For the best male and female crab categories, each team prepared one male crab weighing 0.6 kg or more and one female crab weighing 0.5 kg or more. As for the best crab couple category, each team presented a male and a female crab but could not use the same crabs from the previous contests.

At the end of the contest, the organizing committee awarded the title of Best Male Crab to Team Thong Nhat (Hai Lang commune), Best Female Crab to Team Truong Tung (Hai Lang commune), and Best Crab Couple to Team Thong Nhat, Hai Lang commune.

The winning crabs were crowned and celebrated, much like beauty pageant winners.

Ms. Do Thi Duyen, Head of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Tien Yen district and head judge of the contest, shared that the district is committed to promoting crab farming. Currently, Tien Yen has nearly 1,000 hectares of crab farming area, with an average annual yield of over 100 tons. The “Best Crab” contest not only provided a fun competition for crab farmers in Hai Lang commune but also helped promote the local crab brand to tourists within and outside the province.

The Den Duc Ong Hoang Can Festival also featured other exciting activities such as traditional culinary contests, sports competitions, and a display of beautiful offerings to Duc Ong Hoang Can.

Furthermore, during the festival, the Ministry of Culture, Sports, and Tourism presented the decision and certificate recognizing the Soong Co folk singing of the San Diu ethnic group in Quang Ninh province as a national intangible cultural heritage.

The Den Duc Ong Hoang Can Festival and the San Diu Cultural and Sports Festival are annual events that aim to preserve and revive the traditional cultural values and unique customs of the San Diu ethnic group in Tien Yen district. These festivals contribute to the conservation and promotion of their outstanding cultural heritage, providing entertainment and enhancing the spiritual life of the local community.
