On December 2nd, the Ministry of Transport submitted a proposal to the Prime Minister for approval to include the Mang Den Airport project in the master plan for the development of the country’s airport system for the period 2021-2030, with a vision towards 2050. This decision is based on the research results presented in Report No. 182 dated September 25, 2024, by the People’s Committee of Kon Tum Province.

The proposed airport will be located in Mang Den town, Kon Plong district, approximately 45 kilometers northeast of Kon Tum city, 73 kilometers northeast of Pleiku Airport, 105 kilometers northwest of Phu Cat Airport, and 93 kilometers southwest of Chu Lai Airport. The planned area for the airport is approximately 350 hectares, and it is expected to serve around 1 million passengers annually by 2030, with potential for further expansion in the post-2030 phase. The airport is designed to meet ICAO standards as a 4C-grade airport.

The estimated initial investment for the construction of Mang Den Airport is nearly VND 5,000 billion. The funding sources include approximately VND 330 billion (6.6%) from the state budget for land clearance and the remaining VND 4,600 billion (93.4%) from investors through a public-private partnership (PPP) model.

The projected payback period for the Mang Den Airport project is over 48 years.

Developing Mang Den into an Attractive Destination in the Central Highlands

Mang Den, located at an altitude of about 1,200 meters above sea level, is the district town of Kon Plong District, Kon Tum Province. It is accessible via National Highway 24 and is situated about 50 kilometers northeast of Kon Tum city and 140 kilometers southwest of Quang Ngai city.

The master plan for the Mang Den tourist area aims to develop it into a national and international tourism, resort, and cultural hub with modern social and technical infrastructure and diverse, high-quality tourism products. The development strategy is structured as “Two development corridors – Three centers – Four urban areas,” with a focus on sustainable tourism that preserves and promotes cultural heritage and traditional values, protects the environment, and ensures social welfare, national defense, security, and social order.

Last year, Deputy Prime Minister Tran Hong Ha approved the task of master planning the construction of the Mang Den tourist area in Kon Plong District, Kon Tum Province, by 2045. The goal is to develop Mang Den into an attractive destination in the Central Highlands, featuring unique tourism products that showcase the area’s natural beauty, biodiversity, and cultural traditions.

The plan emphasizes sustainable tourism development, preservation and promotion of cultural heritage and traditional values, environmental protection, job creation, and social welfare. It also takes into account population growth, expecting a population of 82,000 by 2030 and 184,300 (including converted population) by 2045. Additionally, it forecasts an annual tourist arrival of 2.5 million by 2030 and 5 million by 2045.

The relevant agencies are advised to focus on enhancing external and internal transportation connections with nearby tourist destinations in Gia Lai, Quang Nam, and Quang Ngai provinces, as well as strengthening the linkage between Central and Central Highlands tourism routes.

Mang Den, known as a “miniature Dalat,” boasts pristine forests, lakes, waterfalls, pine hills, and a cool, fresh climate. In 2023, this eco-tourism destination welcomed 1 million visitors, and it is projected to attract 1.2 million visitors and generate a revenue of VND 240 billion in 2024.
