According to information from the Public Security of Huong Hoa District (Quang Tri Province), the agency has recently discovered and arrested multiple cases of smuggling sand sugar, beer, and liquor.

Specifically, at 6 am on December 12, the team for investigating economic and position-related crimes of the Public Security of Huong Hoa District caught a car with the license plate number 74C-030.XX, driven by Mr. T.V.Q, residing in An Ha ward, Lao Bao town, transporting 1.6 tons of Thai sugar.

At the same time, the authorities detected Mr. T.D.T, living in Cam Vu village, Cam Thuy commune, Cam Lo district, carrying 1.6 tons of Thai white sugar.

Functional forces of Quang Tri province detected many cases of transporting and storing smuggled goods during the year-end period

About 30 minutes later, in Nai Cuu village, Tan Thanh commune, Huong Hoa district, the authorities detected Mr. L.Q.D (residing in Dong Le ward, Dong Ha city) driving a car with the license plate number 29D-234.XX carrying 1,600 bottles of Heineken beer and 120 bottles of Johnnie Walker Red Label whiskey.

Continuing the patrol, when they arrived in An Ha ward, Lao Bao town, Huong Hoa district, the authorities detected Mr. D.T.L, living in Co Thanh village, Tan Thanh commune, Huong Hoa district, gathering more than 1.6 tons of Thai white sugar.

At the investigation agency, the detected individuals admitted that the aforementioned goods were smuggled, without valid documents to prove their origin. These individuals were hired to gather and transport the goods from Lao Bao town to Dong Ha city for consumption.

Quang Tri Province has two international border gates, Lao Bao (in Huong Hoa District) and La Lay (in Dakrong District), sharing a tens-of-kilometers-long land border and the Sepon River with Laos. Consequently, there are thousands of trails along the border, making the situation of illegal trading and transportation of goods complicated, especially during the year-end period.

Especially, the border river of Sepon, adjacent to Laos, running through Lao Bao town, Tan Thanh commune, and Tan Long commune (in Huong Hoa District), and National Highway 9 from here to Dong Ha city, are always “hot spots” for banned and smuggled goods trading and transportation.

Smuggling individuals gather goods on the Laos side and then take advantage of the difficult terrain, darkness, and loopholes in the functional forces’ management to hire porters to carry goods across the border through trails or use small motorboats to transport goods across the Sepon River to gather at wharves on the Vietnam side.

Then, the smugglers gather goods scattered at some houses along the Sepon River or at gathering points and warehouses, waiting for opportunities to use cars to collect goods and transport them through National Highway 9 to the inland for consumption or mix them with goods for official import and export.

Therefore, the functional forces of Quang Tri Province have arranged forces to effectively perform the work of preventing smuggling and trade fraud, contributing to stabilizing the market and ensuring the benefits of consumers.
