According to statistics from the General Statistics Office, in January 2025, international arrivals to Vietnam reached nearly 2.1 million, up 18.5% from the previous month and 36.9% from the same period last year.
The largest group of tourists to Vietnam in January 2025 was from Asian countries, with over 1.6 million visitors, followed by Europe, the Americas, and Australia.
Notably, there was a significant growth in the number of Chinese tourists, with nearly 575,000 arrivals, an increase of 48.2% from the previous month and a remarkable 137.4% surge compared to the same period last year. China surpassed South Korea to become Vietnam’s largest source market in the first month of 2025.
Additionally, the Japanese market showed strong growth with 72,300 arrivals, a 30.2% increase from the previous month. Cambodia also witnessed a boom in outbound tourism to Vietnam, with a 64.2% surge from the previous month and a 168.6% increase from the same period last year, totaling over 100,000 arrivals.
However, some markets experienced a decline due to the fact that January coincided with the Lunar New Year celebrations in several countries, leading to reduced travel during this period.
South Korea, for instance, dropped to the second position with more than 417,000 arrivals, a slight decrease of nearly 4% from the previous month and the same as the previous year. Other markets like Taiwan, China also saw a decline of 17.9%, Malaysia (-21.2%), Singapore (-43.9%), Laos (-22.8%), and India (-13%).
On a positive note, there was a significant increase in visitors from European countries, especially Western European countries on the visa waiver list.
Apart from Russia, which showed a growth of over 49%, other markets like Italy (39.8%), Denmark (41.5%), the UK (25.6%), France (15.3%), Germany (19.3%), the Netherlands (20.6%), Switzerland (18%), and Poland (20.6%) also recorded impressive increases.
This growth reflects the positive impact of the government’s Resolution 128/NQ-CP, which took effect on August 15, 2023, extending the temporary stay limit from 15 to 45 days for 13 countries eligible for unilateral visa waivers.
From March 1st, Vietnam will grant visa waivers to citizens of Poland, the Czech Republic, and Switzerland when traveling to the country for tourism purposes.
Additionally, arrivals from the US and Canadian markets also increased by 25.5% and 35.3%, respectively. The Australian market, including both Australia and New Zealand, also witnessed a rise of over 30%.
According to the Vietnam National Administration of Tourism (VNAT) under the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, during the Lunar New Year holiday in 2025, many localities experienced a significant increase in international tourist arrivals.
Notably, Quang Ninh welcomed approximately 228,700 visitors, while Da Nang received over 228,000 visitors, a 29% increase compared to the same period in 2024. Quang Nam welcomed 157,000 visitors, a 40% increase, while Hanoi estimated 142,000 arrivals, a 15.8% rise. Ho Chi Minh City welcomed 87,358 visitors, a 16.5% increase, while Kien Giang and Hue City estimated 76,653 and 60,170 visitors, respectively, the latter representing a remarkable 33% surge.
These positive results can be attributed to the favorable visa policies, strategic market restructuring, and the dedication of local businesses and authorities in innovating products and promoting tourism.
For 2025, the tourism industry aims to welcome and serve 22-23 million international visitors.
