On February 18, the Investigation Police Agency of Bien Hoa City Public Security arrested and detained Nguyen Hieu Cuong (41 years old), a land official of Phuoc Tan ward, Bien Hoa city (Dong Nai), to investigate the act of abuse of position and power while performing official duties.

According to the investigation agency, during his tenure as a land official in charge of construction order in Phuoc Tan ward from 2011 to the present, Nguyen Hieu Cuong showed signs of abusing his position and power to “protect” illegal and unlicensed construction cases in the ward for personal gain.
Specifically, since the State implemented the site clearance for the Bien Hoa – Vung Tau Expressway project, passing through Phuoc Tan ward, relevant sectors detected hundreds of cases of illegal construction on agricultural land and construction that did not conform to the planning. This has caused significant difficulties in compensation, support, and resettlement during the site clearance process for this key national project.
