On February 13th, 2025, the exchange rate of the Vietnamese Dong (VND) against the US Dollar (USD) continued to rise in commercial banks.
Specifically, the State Bank of Vietnam set the daily reference exchange rate at 24,572 VND per USD, an increase of 22 VND from the previous day.
With a +/- 5% fluctuation band, the ceiling and floor rates accordingly changed to 25,801 VND/USD and 23,343 VND/USD.
The exchange rates applied by the State Bank for purchasing and selling currencies in the inter-bank foreign exchange market were also adjusted to 23,394 VND/USD and 25,750 VND/USD, respectively.
At Vietcombank and BIDV, two major commercial banks, the buying rate for USD was listed at 25,380 VND, while the selling rate was 25,740 VND. This reflected an increase of 40 VND and 30 VND, respectively, compared to the previous day’s rates.
Regarding the Chinese Yuan (CNY), Vietcombank’s exchange rates were 3,442-3,553 VND/CNY, a slight increase of 2 VND from the previous day. Meanwhile, BIDV’s rates for the Yuan rose by 4 VND on the buying side and 3 VND on the selling side, settling at 3,460-3,554 VND/CNY.

The Highest Central Exchange Rate in a Year
As of February 4th, the Dollar Index weakened by 0.5% to 108.96, retreating from a three-week high of 109.88 touched the previous day. Despite this, the USD/VND rate remained under pressure as markets forecast a diminishing likelihood of the FED executing two interest rate cuts this year, with the probability now sitting at just under 50%.

In its latest economic update on Vietnam, released on December 12, 2024, Standard Chartered Bank forecasts a strong USD in 2025, with a weakening bias in the early part of the year. The bank predicts a 6.7% GDP growth for Vietnam in 2025, with a 7.5% year-on-year expansion in the first half and a 6.1% growth in the latter half.
