The “Vietnam – Japan Semiconductor Business Networking” event, held in Hanoi on February 19, saw a plethora of discussions centered on collaboration prospects. These prospects encompassed technology transfer, supply chain development, and high-quality workforce training, all geared towards fortifying Vietnam’s stance within the global semiconductor value chain.

HARNESSING MUTUAL STRENGTHS TO PROPEL THE SEMICONDUCTOR INDUSTRY FORWARD

Mr. Vu Quoc Huy, Director of the National Innovation Center (NIC), addressed the gathering by underscoring Vietnam’s long-term development strategy, which rests on three foundational pillars: digital transformation, green transition, and innovation. Notably, he highlighted the semiconductor industry’s pivotal role in global economic growth, especially amidst the digital transformation and artificial intelligence revolution.

“Vietnam possesses all the necessary prerequisites for collaboration with enterprises and investors worldwide within the semiconductor industry,” asserted Mr. Huy, exuding confidence in the country’s potential.

Japan, on the other hand, has solidified its position as a global powerhouse in the semiconductor industry, housing numerous top-tier companies. According to Mr. Huy, Japan has also made remarkable strides in semiconductor manufacturing, particularly in the Kyushu region, often dubbed Japan’s “Silicon Island.”

“Fortifying cooperation between our two nations will enable Vietnam to integrate more profoundly into the global semiconductor value chain,” Mr. Huy remarked. “Simultaneously, Kyushu will further cement its status as Japan’s semiconductor and electronics epicenter, thereby contributing to the country’s broader aspirations within the global semiconductor arena.”

Echoing these sentiments, Deputy Ambassador of Japan to Vietnam, Ishikawa Isamu, underscored Japan’s enduring leadership in the semiconductor industry. He elaborated that Japanese enterprises not only excel in integrated circuit manufacturing but also boast a competitive edge in semiconductor equipment production.

The deputy ambassador emphasized that by deepening collaboration with Kyushu, Vietnam gains access to cutting-edge technology, industry expertise, and a robust network of top-tier enterprises. These advantages will collectively accelerate the growth of Vietnam’s domestic semiconductor sector.

“I wholeheartedly concur with the adage, ‘If you want to go fast, go alone; if you want to go far, go together,’” shared Deputy Ambassador Ishikawa. “By fortifying the cooperation between businesses from our nations, we will further augment the Vietnam-Japan relationship, paving the way for a more prosperous future.”

FOSTERING A HIGH-CALIBER SEMICONDUCTOR WORKFORCE

Deputy Ambassador Ishikawa drew attention to the mid-term review meeting of the Vietnam-Japan Joint Initiative in the New Era, held in December last year, where semiconductor workforce development was identified as a key priority for bilateral cooperation.

Additionally, he noted the Vietnamese government’s ambitious target of training 50,000 semiconductor workers by 2030 to address the surging demand in this strategic industry.

Deputy Ambassador of Japan to Vietnam, Ishikawa Isamu, at the event, emphasizing the importance of collaboration.

“In this context, fostering cooperation in semiconductor workforce training between our nations will yield significant mutual benefits,” affirmed the Deputy Ambassador. “It will enhance competitiveness and ensure the sustainable advancement of this strategic industry, solidifying our position as “natural allies” in the semiconductor realm.”

To translate this vision into reality, Mr. Nguyen Vinh Quang, Founder and CEO of FPT Semiconductor, proposed the formation of two strategic alliances between Vietnam and Japan.

The first is the Semiconductor Education Alliance, dedicated to cultivating a highly skilled workforce for both countries. The second is the Semiconductor Manufacturing Supply Chain Alliance, aimed at ensuring supply chain resilience, technological advancement, and Vietnam’s progressive ascension within the global semiconductor ecosystem.

Reinforcing the importance of talent development, a representative from the Kyushu Bureau of Economy, Trade, and Industry (Japan) highlighted the region’s burgeoning need for high-quality semiconductor professionals. “We aspire to forge strong partnerships with Vietnamese enterprises and training institutions,” they shared, “to collectively propel the growth of the semiconductor sector in Kyushu, and Japan as a whole, in the years to come.”
