According to Công an TP HCM, the local police in Bình Hưng Hòa A ward, Bình Tân district, Ho Chi Minh City, received a report from a student in the area regarding a scam.

Based on the victim’s statement, at 12:14 pm on March 18, 2025, Ms. L.Q.T, a student residing in Bình Tân district, received a phone call from the number “0886836944”. The caller claimed to be Nguyen Van Tan, an official of the Ho Chi Minh City People’s Committee, and informed T. that she was allegedly involved in a drug trafficking case. He then stated that the Da Nang Police would call her to take her statement.

Subsequently, a caller from the number “0917416403” identified himself as Tran Van Nghia, an officer of the Da Nang Police, and aggressively threatened T. to provide her personal information and ID card details.

The scammers then transferred 45 million VND into T.’s account without her consent. T. became anxious about the large sum of money in her account. At this point, the scammers claimed that T. had borrowed money from them online, instructing her to transfer over 50 million VND (including T.’s personal savings) to the account number 8822763095 they provided.

After receiving the money, the scammers stopped responding. Realizing she had been scammed, T. and her family reported the incident to the Bình Hưng Hòa A ward police.

The local police promptly opened an investigation, froze the account number 8822763095, and coordinated with relevant units to identify and apprehend the perpetrators.
