In a recent development, the Prime Minister of Vietnam has approved adjustments to the master plan for the development of the country’s airport system for the period of 2021-2030, with a vision towards 2050. This decision involves an additional investment of approximately VND 23,000 billion in the airport system by 2030.

Notably, the adjusted plan includes the Gia Binh International Airport, aimed at sharing and reducing the burden on the Noi Bai International Airport.

By 2030, the Gia Binh International Airport is expected to have a capacity of around 5 million passengers and 250,000 tons of cargo annually. The vision for 2050 foresees a development capacity of approximately 15 million passengers and 1 million tons of cargo per year.

Previously, the Ministry of Public Security had sent a document to the Ministry of Construction regarding the need to supplement the planning of the Gia Binh International Airport for the period of 2021-2030, with a vision towards 2050.

According to the document, the Gia Binh International Airport would require approximately 363.5 hectares of land to accommodate a capacity of 1 million tons of cargo and 3 million passengers annually by 2050. The passenger and cargo terminals are designed to be expandable to handle up to 2 million tons of cargo and 5 million passengers per year.

The Gia Binh International Airport has been incorporated into the national airport system as a 4E-grade airport, playing a significant role in the country’s airport network. It serves as a multi-purpose airport, catering to both the training and combat readiness needs of the People’s Public Security Air Force, as well as the requirements of special flights for the leaders of the Party and the State. It also facilitates civil aviation operations.

At the groundbreaking ceremony, Mr. Tran Minh Son, Vice Chairman of the Board of Directors of Sun Group, committed, “If all goes well, we will complete the construction of both phases of the airport within 12 months.”
