On May 6, following the Australian Labor Party’s victory in the federal election, Vietnamese Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh held a phone conversation with his Australian counterpart, Anthony Albanese.

During the call, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh once again extended congratulations to the Labor Party and Prime Minister Albanese, emphasizing that their victory reflects the trust of the Australian people in the party’s leadership and ability to steer the country toward stable development.

Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh highly appreciated the strong development of bilateral relations, acknowledging the important contributions and role of Prime Minister Albanese; he requested that the Australian Government continue to dedicate resources and attention, as well as give high priority to Southeast Asia, including Vietnam.

Discussing key areas of cooperation such as economy, trade, ODA, climate change response, and energy transition, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh shared Vietnam’s appreciation for Australia’s Southeast Asia Economic Strategy. He expressed confidence that with the implementation of this strategy, economic cooperation between Australia and Vietnam will flourish.

Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh suggested that both countries maximize the benefits of multilateral trade frameworks to which they are jointly committed to overcome common challenges. He affirmed Vietnam’s readiness to engage with Australia on a bilateral trade and investment agreement to quickly achieve the goal of doubling two-way trade to 20 billion USD and investment.

Prime Minister Albanese expressed his gratitude for Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh’s warm congratulations and looked forward to further enhancing the substance of the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership between the two countries.

Prime Minister Albanese shared his admiration for the Vietnamese Government, Party, State, and people in rapidly transforming Vietnam into one of the region’s leading economic centers. To address current economic and trade challenges, Prime Minister Albanese emphasized the need to safeguard a free and open multilateral trading system and promote market openness for each other’s goods and services.

On this occasion, Prime Minister Albanese affirmed the Australian Governor-General’s desire to visit Vietnam soon. Both leaders agreed on the importance of maintaining exchanges through various channels and levels, particularly through annual meetings between the two Prime Ministers.
