On the morning of May 9, the Ministry of Industry and Trade, in collaboration with the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment, hosted a conference on “Promoting Trade in Agricultural, Forestry, and Aquatic Products between Vietnam and the United States.” This initiative aligns with the Prime Minister’s directives on advancing trade agreements, striving for a fair and sustainable balance of trade between the two nations.

Speaking at the event, Minister of Agriculture and Environment, Do Duc Duy, shared that amidst the looming threat of retaliatory tariffs at a rate of 46%, the government and relevant ministries have proactively engaged in negotiations with the United States to safeguard the interests of producers and businesses.

“We have issued a plan to boost exports to the United States, emphasizing transparency in supply chains and raw material regions; digital technology integration for product traceability; building industry brands based on compliance and sustainability; and promoting green transformation to meet stringent environmental standards from markets like the US, EU, and Japan”, the Minister added.

The conference witnessed robust discussions among delegates regarding the current state of production and imports of agricultural, forestry, and aquatic products from the US. They identified bottlenecks in trade and proposed solutions to remove barriers and facilitate bilateral trade.

Minister of Industry and Trade, Nguyen Hong Dien, affirmed that the United States is a significant market for Vietnam’s agricultural, forestry, and aquatic products and also a crucial source of cereals, meat, dairy, timber, and other commodities. Importing these products from the US not only meets short-term consumer demands and balances trade but also establishes a foundation for long-term cooperation, embracing high technology, circularity, and sustainability.

“There is a pressing need for the governments and relevant ministries of both countries to review and remove trade barriers and introduce robust and feasible incentive mechanisms, including tax and capital incentives and logistics support, to propel business growth”, emphasized Minister Dien.

The Minister also urged associations and businesses to proactively connect with US partners, seize opportunities for efficient imports and exports, and expand collaboration in developing a green, clean, and high-value-added agriculture sector. The Ministry of Industry and Trade is committed to supporting businesses, especially in swiftly addressing technical barriers, streamlining administrative procedures, and opening the US market for agricultural, forestry, and aquatic products.
