Boosting Trade with the US
On May 7th, Mr. Nguyen Hong Dien, Vietnam’s Minister of Industry and Trade and Head of the Government’s Negotiation Delegation, met with several large corporations and conglomerates to discuss the implementation of trade agreements with the United States. During the meeting, representatives from the corporations reported on the progress of purchase agreements signed in 2025, and provided assessments and forecasts for the demand of imports, equipment, services, goods, and raw materials in which the US has a competitive advantage this year and in the years to come.

The leaders of the corporations stated that from now until June, they will intensify meetings and work with US partners to promote contracts and materialize the memorandums of understanding that have been signed.
After hearing the opinions of the business representatives, Minister Nguyen Hong Dien stated that Vietnam has a large, valuable, and stable demand for purchasing goods, equipment, and services from the US. These are products in which the US has a strong advantage and Vietnam has a high demand. However, trade exchanges between the two countries have not truly lived up to their potential.
Minister Dien emphasized the need for both sides to urgently review and address any obstacles, creating favorable conditions for businesses in the trade of essential products, thus complementing each other’s needs.
He requested that in the coming time, businesses should be more proactive in realizing this vast potential. “This is a practical action to promote substantive, in-depth, and effective economic, trade, and investment cooperation between the two countries; while also contributing to a harmonious and sustainable trade balance,” said Minister Nguyen Hong Dien.
Strengthening the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership
On the same day, Minister Nguyen Hong Dien had a working session with H.E. Marc E. Knapper, US Ambassador to Vietnam, to promote the negotiation process and address bilateral economic and trade issues between Vietnam and the US in the current period.
Minister Dien affirmed the importance of cooperation between the two countries and requested that the US strengthen the comprehensive strategic partnership for peace, cooperation, and sustainable development, for the benefit of each country and the stability of the region. He also emphasized promoting harmonious, sustainable, and long-term trade between Vietnam and the US, ensuring compliance with international commitments to which Vietnam is a member, and not affecting relations with other partners. These directions are in line with the guidance agreed upon by the high-level leaders of both countries.

For his part, Ambassador Marc E. Knapper appreciated Vietnam’s proactive, constructive, and goodwill gestures. He explained that the US’s new trade policy aims to further promote trade and investment, protect economic security, national security, and American workers, without causing harm to partner countries. Despite the challenges ahead, Ambassador Knapper expressed his confidence that with high goodwill, the negotiation process between the two countries will achieve positive results, bringing benefits to the people and business communities of both nations.
