According to the reported plan, the Quang Ngai – Kon Tum expressway project has a total length of approximately 144 kilometers, with an expected extension of about 8 kilometers compared to the original plan due to challenging terrain conditions at Violak and Mang Den passes.
Total Investment of Over VND 44,000 Billion
The starting point (Km 0+000) intersects with the North-South expressway in the east, in Duc Pho district, Quang Ngai province. The endpoint intersects with the North-South expressway in the west, in Kon Tum city, Kon Tum province.
The proposed expressway will have four lanes, designed to expressway standards with a speed limit of 80-100 km/h. The preliminary total investment is estimated to be over VND 44,300 billion.
Local authorities are responsible for arranging funds for land clearance, while the central government will allocate funds for construction and other remaining costs.
If implemented according to current regulations, the project is expected to be approved for investment in October 2025, with investment approval in May 2026, construction commencement in December 2026, and completion in December 2029.
If implemented under a special mechanism (similar to the North-South expressway in the east), the project will be approved for investment in October 2025, with investment approval in April 2026, construction starting in October 2026, and completion in September 2029.
Connecting Laos and Cambodia’s Border Gates to the North-South Corridors
The Ministry of Construction affirms that investing in the Quang Ngai – Kon Tum expressway is necessary. The project will form the fastest and most convenient highway, connecting Quang Ngai and Kon Tum provinces and linking Laos and Cambodia’s border gates in the Central Highlands with the North-South corridors and Vietnam’s coastal economic zones.
If the Prime Minister decides to assign the local authority as the managing agency, the Ministry of Construction will direct relevant agencies to hand over the preliminary research results to the locality for the next steps.
The Quang Ngai – Kon Tum expressway plays a crucial role in connecting the Central Coastal region with the Central Highlands, specifically from Quang Ngai to Kon Tum. This development facilitates the formation of the Bo Y – Kon Tum – Mang Den – Quang Ngai economic corridor, promoting trade, cargo transportation, and economic growth between the regions.
Once constructed, the project will maximize the geographical and natural advantages of the two localities, especially Kon Tum’s potential for tourism development (the national tourist area of Mang Den) and Quang Ngai’s port and tourism potential (Ly Son island district, which is poised to become a sea-island tourism hub).
Completing the expressway will provide a strong impetus for the socio-economic development of Quang Ngai and Kon Tum provinces, reducing transportation costs and travel time, thereby boosting the growth of industries, agriculture, and services.
